alright, DD is 6.5 months and loves when I give her the oppertunity to self-feed. We do bananas, peaches, avacados, cooked squash...things like that, and she eats once every few days. She does great at picking up the food and feeding herself when I first give it to her, but after she slobbers all over it and smoshes it everywhere she gets really upset because she can't grab it anymore! I know she has the capability to self feed, as, like I said, the first 5 mins or so she does awesome and can pick up small and big pieces alike, its just after the food (and her hands) gets slimey it slips out of her hands and all over the tray as she tries to grab it. I really want to let her self feed, but I end up holding it for her (letting her move her face to it and take it in her own mouth, just holding it at her level for her) towards the end so she doesn't cry. She's not done then either, because she'll cry if I take her out of the chair too. What do/did you fellow self-feeders do when the food got mushy? Are there any foods that worked better for you than others?
I read that too, but can she have those yet? I tried to figure that out earlier and its all based on jar food fed babies, so I'm not sure if its the same or not. Cheerios brand says they can eat cheerios at 8 months. Didn't really say why except that 8 months is when they can start "self feeding" (as opposed to spoon feeding) so I wasn't sure if it applied still since we are self feeding from the start. Anyways, long story short, can I coat them in crushed organic o's (like cheerios knock offs) or should I wait until she'll older for allergy purposes....?
also, is it safe to leave the skin on things like peaches? We used defrosted frozen ones last time and she love them, but I think it might be easier if we did fresh with skin on it for the grip it provides.
Skin is a choking hazard, I'd keep it off. Yes, you can use the organic Ohs. There are also organic puffed rice crispies or gluten free Ohs if you're concerned about allergies.
don´t worry. if she can´t pick it up, doit for her. i did that with my son. he´s now 11mo and eats by himself pefectly. she is very little! and just because you help her, doesn´t mean she won´t do it anymore. but yes, there are othr foods that aren´t so mushy. but i can´t think of any for her age. here in spain and mexico we give cereals mixed with fruit or milk at that age but no finger foods! you are doing great....SHE is doing great. don´t worry!
You could roll them in crushed rice cereal (like rice crispies) Rice is pretty low on the allergy list (hence trying to make all babies eat it first....)
I'll have to get some organic rice crispies (I know I do
), I think she'd really like those! thanks!
