DD Has Been Pushing Away Breast...

401 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Leilalu
The past few days my almost 12 mo. old DD has been pushing away at the breast several times a day upon my offering. This is a new thing and I'm just wondering if this means that she's either; a) not hungry b) she starting to wean c) my milk tastes funny/bad d) she's just too busy e) she's teething f) my milk isn't letting down fast enough, etc.... I really am confused because she will go towards the breast as though she wants to nurse and will latch on but then it's almost as though she get's mad and she'll pull away and take her hand and smash my breast away. Does anyone know what this means? She will eventually nurse at another point in time throughout the day but it seems as though not as often. I guess I'm wondering if I should be concerned at this point? Thanks in advance for your suggestions and advice!

It could be any/all of those things

Is this her first big distractibility phase? There is SO much going on at 12mo. Learning about food and choices is one of the big ones. Saying "no" is so much fun b/c it shows control and choice (even if she really wants to say "yes" :LOL ).

Babies slow down their physical growth a lot too. My oldest 3 all stopped growing around 9mo and just sort of plateau'd for a long while and didn't eat so much (bm or food) b/c they were busy. They had better things to do.

I'd say as long as she has a couple sessions at the breast with true gusto (and I really mean that last a long while and get into the hind milk, etc) like at night or in the morning then she's probably not weaning. My children definitely didn't wean just by cutting down on their day nursings at this age.

My 12m DS was doing something very similar just about a week or two ago. I was so confused... He has always been an avid nurser, but he was turning his head and pushing the breast away from him. I have no idea if this had anything to do with it, but I later started my period. When it was over, he was back to nursing like a champ. His molars are coming in, so that might have had something to do with it, too. Or that he is nosy and distractable.
I just paid really close attention to his cues and and he stopped pushing me away.

Good luck with your babe.

Thanks mamas! I'm sure that it is the distractabilty thing or that she's "testing" out her new power...it just had me a little freaked as I wasn't ready for her to start weaning!
: She does continue to have good nursing sessions throughout the night and some during the day so I'm not going to worry for now. Thanks for letting me know this is normal at this age!

Just make sure she nurses at either regular times each day or before eating solid foods. As long as you keep it a house rule that milk is first I think you shouldbe alright
Babies sometimes go on nursning strikes. I have told ds numerous times though that if he ever stopped wanting to nurse, that was all he was getting- only milk, no solids(he loves food!:LOL )
