I should probably also post this in the bfing forum and the toddler forum. But here goes. My dd, she is 2.5, has sort of "forgotten" to nurse. My milk was gone for about 2 months with this pregnancy before my colostrum came in. Now, she wants to nurse a lot, but is not getting a good latch anymore. She is nursing on the nipple, and it hurts. What I have tried to do is tell her to use a "big mouth" and eat the whole nummie, not just the nummie ball (what she calls my nipples). Sometimes she does it, sometimes not. A lot of the time, I notice that she is pursing her lips tightly instead of relaxing them. It is NOT very comfortable for me.
Has anyone else had this experience? Is there another way to teach her how to nurse again? I know all the little infant tricks, but with a toddler, it's a matter of verbal communication, and I don't know if I am doing it effectively. Does anyone have any suggestions? Help save my boobs!!!

I could never get DD #1 to nurse again. The latch just wasn't the same. DS is still nursing (dry nursing now) 1x a day, and I'm determined to keep that up so he doesn't forget also.

Hmmm...my 2.5 yr od dd is having latch issues as well. I tell her to open wide, use her tongue and no teeth. It usually works for a few minutes and then I have to remind her.

To be honest I wouldn't mind if she weaned. : Some days I just don't feel like nursing her. I love the bond and hate to lose it, but I guess I'm just touched out,YK?

Do you plan on tandem nursing? I love the idea, but I remember how touched out I got nursing 1 little one, and adding a will-be-3-yr-old to the mix just seems like too much. If she could get down to 1x per day I would be fine, but 3-5x a day is tiring.

We've also had latch issues as dd usually takes in just the nipple and I have gouge marks where her teeth have been when she is finished. I haven't had much success with improving her latch, so I don't have much to offer in the way of suggestions. But I am also at the point where I wouldn't mind too much if she weaned. We only nurse 1-2 times a day, but it is starting to give me a creepy crawly feeling. Plus, I don't know how well it will go nursing twins and a 3 year old. I know it can be done, but I don't think it will work well for me. We'll see i guess.

Good luck and let us know if you find the miracle cure.

Glad to hear of a twin mom still nursing a little during pregnancy. It is making me touched out. I'm thinking I'd be OK with tandem if it was just 1 or 2x a day.

Subbing because I am dealing with the same thing.

Seems like every nursing session involves a litany of "open wider, no teeth, oww you're hurting mama, honey, no teeth"

That's a pretty good idea, considering that dd plays like she's a dog all the time. Don't know if that would work for anyone else? I think I'll give it a shot. I'm determined to make this work!!

Yes, I do plan to tandem. I'm wondering how it will work . . . . hmmmmm. My main concern is having a newborn exposed to toddler germs.
