First off let me say that she is acting normal otherwise.

She is 8 mths today. When she gets excited she will make this breathing noise like she is gasping for air. It is hard to describe with words, but it is like when you swim really far under water and then come up for air and you gulp a bunch of air down. Sorry I do not know how else to describe it. However, she has a smile on her face when she does it. I am thinking that she has just figured out how to make a new noise, but I thought that I would seek out other thoughts too!

Also, she does not have any health issues.

Thanks!
Kelly

she most likely found a new noise she could make...and it probably feels funny...if she's smiling/looking for recognition...like it soubds like she is...then i'd just say she's proud of new control of a noise/sensation she's accomplished!

my 6 mo old DD does this too...she totally cracks herself up!! And usually it is followed by one of her loud squeals, but not always. DH doesn't like it but she does it all the time during the day with me and is A-OK. Who knows what her next new sound will be

My dd did that a lot when she was smaller. She's 13 months now and doesn't do it anymore. Her ped. described what it is that makes them make that noise and its not a cause for concern (although I can't remember what exactly he said).

It would send my husband into a panic nearly everytime she did it :LOL Its funny now, but it was scary when she was a few weeks old and would do it so often.

Don't sweat it, my son still does this and he is 14 months. He thinks it is hilarious! It's kind of like the head shaking thing ( I don't know if any of you have experienced this phenomena :LOL ) it is kind of scary to watch as a parent, but obviously there is nothing wrong with them! Now when he makes the gasping noise he does it for the yuks he gets from others, kind of like a weird social laugh.

My first daughter did that...her trachea was still a bit too soft and it resulted in those awful noises. The ped said it was tracheomalacia (I'm sure I butchered that spelling). It was scary.

One thing I did before I took her in was to videotape her making these noises, especially in her sleep, because I really felt there was a concern, and I didn't want to be brushed off in case she didn't happen to do it at the appointment.
