We went to a local park that has a farm center we've visited many times. This weekend they had an organic festival. When we were leaving the festival, we took Dd to see some of her friends, including the calf she fell in love with when the calf licked the salt off her arm a few months ago.

When we were there, they brought in the calf's Mom, and kids gathered around for the scheduled demonstration of milking the cow. Dd was INTRIGUED. She could not stop watching the kids squeeze the udder and spray milk into a bucket. This was a revelation, since Dd's only awareness of milk is what comes from me.

I did fear she'd "try this at home," which she did. Once.

We explained that the milk is for the calf, but the Mom has more milk than the calf can drink, so the extra milk is used to make cheese (Dd loves cheese). She said, "Oooooh."

It's pretty interesting to see her understand the concept of extra milk. After my struggle with low supply, Dd knows that Mom doesn't really have a lot of milk, so it's sort of a commodity. She thought the cow with the big udder and giant sprays was really something.

Cool.

Our son had quite a different reaction to seeing cow milking on Reading Rainbow back when he was 4 or 5...I think he'd weaned by then.

He pretended to be the cow when he took a bath that afternoon.! :LOL
