Please, for the love of all that's holy, can you leave the poor dog alone? This request includes, but is not limited to:

-sticking your thumbs in his eyes

-pouring your smoothie on his back, so he can then shake it off and make a good ol' mess

-putting headphones on him

-hitting him with any blunt object you are able to find.

-reaching underneath him and squeezing his penis

-shoveling sand into his mouth

This dog was once our baby and shared the family bed. Now, he is lucky if we remember his name. Please stop making his life even more miserable.

Thank you.

Poor dogs.

My dd will follow our poor old dog around the house, singing to him very lovingly and stepping on him to keep him moving.

That dog will never know how greatful I am to him for his tolerance. Why they so gracefully hand over their place to a human puppy is beyond me, but I really admire it. He's a totally different dog since he became a "big brother." He used to clamp onto my pantleg as I dragged him around the house. Now he never bites, even in play, and has given dd my pantleg.

They are amazing, aren't they?

Not only is my dog tolerating it, he has appointed himself ds' guardian. If the child so much as stumbles, he is right there and barking to get my attention.

I think I need to have a dog appreciation day.

I know my poor cat is subjected to innumerable tea-parties of late, and is very patient. My dog who does not like anyone except me and now DH, is very protective of DD and accepted her from birth as mine.

Funny!! We have to protect our dog from our daughter!
My daughter loves to sneak up on our old dog and grab her fur. That's when she's not playing with the dog's toys or splashing water from the dog's bowl all over the place. I once caught DD eating some of our dog's food. Thank goodness it wasn't that much.

Speaking of doggie's water bowl how do you mamas manage to keep your toddler away from the dog's food/water bowls? I leave mine where DD can't get to it but that also means our poor doggie only get water at certain times of the day and I don't like doing that since we live in a warm humid area.

Can I get a copy for my DS. The dog is SOOOO good and doesn't do a thing. I have a Jack Russell Terrier, which usually means *high maintenance* and she has been nothing but good since the day brought ds home.

DS has learned to throw the ball (only 2 ft) for the dog, dog LOVES that.

Would the OP please write a letter to my son asking him to stop terrorizing our poor bird. We have a green quaker and my son LOVES to try and poke his eye out and really, really, really wants to get one of his tail feathers out to play with. We have to really minimize contact between the two. He won't listen to me or dad, so maybe a letter from a stranger will help?

What type of dogs do you mamas have? I would like to soon (one day) get a dog that is fabulous with infants and also is smart. I had a basset hound that was soooo dumb (but so loveable and cute). I can't do another dumb dog. Thanks!

Well, this morning dd shut the door to the crate so the dog couldn't get out, and when I let the dog out, dd started pulling the dog's tail. Tried to take the dog's leash b/c dd's determined to be a "baby doggy."

On the other hand, she also put more food in the dog's bowl today, fed the dog half of her chicken last night, and right now is trying to tuck the dog in and read the dog a story b/c the dog's falling asleep on the couch.

I figure they're even at this point. Just like human siblings, sometimes!

I have a maltese, but I don't know that I'd recommend one for a toddler. They can be barkers and ankle biters, have "hair" instead of fur, so pulling hair really hurts, they are high maintainance, and while I potty trained my daughter before she was two, the dog is 12 and still has accidents in the house all the time. The nice thing is that no one is allergic to them because they don't shed fur or dander. And they are small so they don't need a lot of space. Mine was easy to train with food rewards and I think that's typical. He will bite hard if I am trying to get something nasty out of his mouth - has drawn blood from me - but nver means to hurt. Fortunately, my toddler has seen how he behaves when he's found some yummy trash and knows better than to interfere.

Retrievers are bred to be gentle (for retrieving birds), but some are dumb. And they need room or regualar walks.

My favorites have always been mutts.

This is so totally my DS! Only replace cat for dog. He LOVES our cat, I mean LOVES him, probably more than the cat would prefer. The cat is a bed, a pillow, a chair, and a playmate. I swear this cat is like no other cat I have ever met, not only does he just lay they, he goes up to DS and begs for more!

Now, the dogs, well, a whole other story. DS loves to feed them, unfortunately this is accomplished by taking food (piece by piece) from the food bowl and shoving it at them. They just take it but when they have had enough (food and him) they just look for higher ground. The water bowl is a play toy that we are just working on teaching DS to leave alone. I must clean up water 1,000,000 times per day though recently, I have had DS "help" with a towel.

I must add that as opposed to the pp, our maltese (we have 2, one is 4 and one is 3 years old) have been great for our 17 month old. They do not bite but will give a small grrr when they have had enough. The no shedding is huge for us and they adapted really well to DS. Potty training was a breeze although they do tend to have some accidents that have all corresponded to a developmental milestone in DS. But, a few days of retraining puts them right back on track.

Overall, you put into words daily life at our house!

I have an Aussie/Lab mix. He wasn't great with children before I had ds. He wanted run after them nipping and barking, in an attempt to herd them. Not really a popular activitiy among the children nor their mother's. But, he's been fabulous since when brought ds home.

I would suggest your local humane society, and go for a gentle lab mix.

Do you have any independent animal shelters or foster organizations in town? They are ideal, because they often let you have the dog for a few days before committing. Also, if you had to bring him back b/c of any issues with your child, you can be assured that the dog won't be euthanized.

I have a boxer and he has been so tolerant of dd - especially since we have been training dd on how to treat the dog (she wants to jump on him etc). Considering that he is a total indoor "lap dog", and he was here first, he has been great with her.
