I am just starting to get into decluttering the toys (etc). I did a toy room clean up tonight. I organized a bit and I put some toys that my dd is too old for but my ds is not ready for yet in the basement for now. I also stuffed a box for freecycle. My question is stuffed animals. they just seem to take up space, my dd doesn't even really play with them. she likes dolls and will very occasionally take an animal to bed with her instead of a doll, but not often. I put a bunch of animals in the basement and kept a bin of the "special" ones - ones my dh got her, ones she got when she was born...but do kids actually start playing with stuffed animals or is it dumb to bother keeping them? thanks!

I recently saw the greatest invention for storing stuffed animals check it out, I am sure you could make one for a little less. Check it out, we may get one if the little stuffed ones become to unruly, right now they are in the zoo(aka crib) that ds does not sleep in

http://hipbabygear.com/fun/forbaby_fun_boon_animal.htm

I loved stuffed animals as a child and they all had different personalities so I thought of them as "real". I couldn't bear the thought of throwing them away even when I got older, the little girl inside just wouldn't let me. Needless to say, this amounted in a HUGE stockpile of stuffed animals for my boys as I gave them all my old ones and they kept getting new ones from people despite my asking them not to give them any.

It was a mess that finally got me ready to get rid of them. My son had an accident on the floor in his room (if you can call it that when he purposely did it. Sigh, I hate potty training) and he rubbed some animals into it before I found the mess. I threw them out and was surprised at how easy it was. After that I went on a purge and donated a ton and threw away ones that were grungy/too bad to donate.

Now, every few months I go through their stuffed animals and take out ones I never see them playing with and donate them. The kids never miss them (I hold the bag in our spare room for a couple days in case they ask for one that I didn't realize was special) and I have a ton less junk.

Now if only that same approach would work with dh's electronics!

When I was a kid, I never would have let my animals be in anything like that.

Just a warning for people who have kids who do pay attention to their stuffed animals--show them the picture *before* ordering one.

Mind you, I also spent about a week when I was 7 sleeping with *all* (about 20) of my stuffed animals so none of them would feel like I didn't love them.

(I will be doing my best to keep my kids down to like 5 each, I know it won't happen, but I'll be doing my best.)

My ds loves the stuffed animals, and he rotates which ones he is attached too which makes it hard to declutter them all. We currently have 3 huge garbage bags full in the basement, and probably one bag full kept in the apartment I just put away the ones he's never paid any attention to, he's 26 mos now, and kept the ones he seems to have assigned personalities to.

My dd loves her stuffed animals, but isn't too attached to many of them. We have one basket upstairs and one tote downstairs for overflow. That's it. I'm constantly going through the downstairs ones and getting rid of ones she never plays with to make room for new ones. It seems like they reproduce overnight, everynight. Where do they all come from?!?

Me too!

At two years old, my son has very little interest in stuffed toys so I have gotten rid of all but maybe 5. Until he shows interest, I will continue to eliminate the "unloved" ones. I have already taken brand new ones straight to the local shelter, which is full of homeless kids.
