I woke up feeling pretty ill this morning at about 3:30 AM. My head was splitting and it felt like sinuses. Without thinking, I took ibuprofen and sudafed. I haven't had sudafed since I found out I was pregnant. I was kind of out of it and didn't think about the fact that it might affect my nursing.

Now that I have already taken the drug ! does anyone have a copy of Hales to tell me whether it is safe? Has anyone done this and had their baby get really...peppy...all of a sudden? Also, will it bring my supply down to take something that is supposed to be drying? I am a pump-a-holic WOHM with a 7 month old.

TIA

Relax. You just took one dose...although it isn't recommended because it can decrease milk, I think your pumping and ds' nursing will stimulate you enough to keep you going just fine.

You can use Afrin nasal spray for up to 3 days, twice a day. Don't use it for more than 3 days because you'll get rebound congestion.

You can also get a Neti pot and do nasal irrigation with saltwater (or just pour it through your sinuses if you don't have a Neti pot).

Don't forget to drink lots and lots of clear fluids, and feel better!

Sudafed is approved by the AAP for use by breastfeeding mothers, so don't beat yourself up, just be sure to drink plenty of water (which will also help your body fight the ickiness). Also check out Cold and Allergy Remedies Compatible with Breastfeeding.

Thanks for speedy replies. I'm bummed about the supply thing, but I feel okay today at work. Not 100% well, but not like I need a decongestant. I see on the Kellymom page that fenugreek and anise teas, both used as galactalogues, are supposed to be good for a cold! Great, I'll drink Mother's Milk tea all day today.

Did you ever notice that you get nauseated more easily since pregnancy? I'm sick to my stomach in a mild way that reminds me of my second trimester. (Nooooo, I couldn't be pregnant. eeeeeee. I think I have a bug, though. )

This has nothing to do with taking these meds during bf'ng...

You really shouldn't take decongestants unless you are just not able to bare your symptoms. What those medicines end up doing in the long run can be harmful to your health. I just wanted to tell you because I had no idea that any harm could come to me but it did. I have bad allergies. I took benadryl every night for YEARS! Next thing I know I went to the psychiatrist for panic attacks. When I told him that I took Benydryl every night he was stunned. He told me that was reason for my panic attacks. It took me over a year of treatment to get rid of the attacks.
