Can anyone tell me th ebenefit of delaying solids past 6 months. My dd is 5 months old and I am just trying to figure out when I will start giving her food. She hasn't shown any interest in solids yet but she does love to drink from a cup (only water). Any insight would be great.

solids for baby are mostly for taste and texture, not nutrition. dd is 8m and still bf every 2-3 hours and does "eat" solids. a bit here, a bit there. sometimes she will eat a jar in a day, but then she wont eat any for 2-3 days. i'm just following her. if your baby wants to try. let her try. hope this helps

From what I understand their digestive systems are much more mature at 6 months. Plus they are more likely to be sitting unassisted and have teeth, and the tongue refex that pushes food out of the mouth is virtually gone.

They say that for the first year, they really only need breastmilk or formula. My pedi said to do cereal after 4 months, but only if she showed interest. No rush at 5 months. Just let her lead when it comes to starting solids, forcing them too soon can turn her off to them.
