I've been given a call that I never thought would come! Word got around that we cd and I've been asked to teach a cding class. I'm really excited. It's possible I may do several, depending on the response. I'm planning on a practice run at home with a couple friends and cousins in a couple weeks, but I was hoping I could get some suggestions.

I've been outlining the things I want to cover today and I would appreciate it if you could tell me if I've missed anything.
-types of diapers
-fabrics
-use & care instructions
-night and on the go diapering
-measuring for sizes
-folding
-wipes
-statistics (like costs of cds versus sposies, landfill info, chemical info, etc)

Also, I'd really like to bring a newborn sized doll with me that would be shaped well for a good prefold folding demo. I was hoping one of dd's would work, but they're either too small or not shaped true to a real baby. Not too expensive, could definitely do Ebay if needed, but I'd like something cute. Especially since if it works out, I may do a couple babywearing demos as well and could use it for both. I just don't really know what's available.

Wish me luck finding lots of converts!

PS - I hope I put post this in the right place. I won't be selling any dipes at these, but I'm hoping to eventually open my own business. Feel free to let me know if I should put it somewhere else.

You may already have these in mind under your existing catergories...but just in case:

Where to buy cloth diapers (and tell them to stay away from the Gerber prefolds)
Accessories such as minishower, diaper pail, etc

You should mention that sewing your own diapers is an option and give websites they can go to for info. The diaper-making board has a sticky with resources.

And you could also slip in there that disposables are very bad at containing breastfed poop and cloth holds it much better. I wish I had know that when I had DS. I used disposables until he was 2 months old and was *shocked* at how much they leaked. And even more shocked when I finally got him into cloth and never had another leak. If someone had just told me, he would have been in cloth from day one.

And I'm soooo jealous of you! I wanna do a demo!

Good luck! I did this about 3 years ago for our homeschool group and it was so fun. And, there were a lot of people that asked questions, some were familiar with wraps and prefolds, and there was generally a lot of interest. I am now know as, "The Diaper Lady." Anytime someone wants to know anything about cloth, they know where to ask. I get calls or emails about it a few times a year and it all stemmed from this presentation.

As for the doll, well, I just used a doll that we had. She was about the right size, but not quite in proportion. So, I just made sure to tell everyone that things would fit better on a real baby, but that different things will fit different babies best.

And, I have used a sling with my last two dc. So, I often have LOTS of people ask me about those. I wish I had a ton to sell when I was slinging them, I could have sold them at every turn.

What about asking a hospital (or other resource) to borrow one of the babies they use in education classes?

Good luck with your presentation.

It took having someone show me how easy it would be to convince me to make the switch, so I'm sure you'll get some converts! I also had major problems with leaking, and have thrown away clothes that I tried and tried to get the poo stains out of when they leaked, but just couldn't. That was a major selling point for me.

Good luck with your class!

I don't know if this was mentioned, but you might tell them to stay away from "optical brighteners" and enzymes in detergents because they are bad on baby's skin.

ohh how much fun!

full size cabage patch dolls are pretty comparable (at least in the rise?)

do you have any brick and mortar stores that sell cds? or maybe diaper services. I know a lot of people are intimidated from buying off the internet. So lots of options to purchase would be a good idea

Thanks everyone! I'm getting more and more excited about this

And thanks fo the reminders about the enzyme detergents, and warning about Gerber stuff. I'll put that on my outline.

I think I need to make up a list of resources to hand out as well. I know we do have one local diaper service, but no other brick and mortar suppliers. But I'll do a list of info sites, make your own, fabrics and notions, etc. I don't really have any store bought dipes, just the ones I've made, and I won't mention it during the presentation, but if people ask afterwards, I may mention that I will be making and selling them. I'm even thinking I may have a night or two scheduled for people to come to my home and learn specifically about how to make your own.

I went out this morning and bought a cute doll. It was only about $20, and it looks pretty accurately sized. It's a Berenguer "La Baby Nursery" doll and I think it's pretty cute. I wish it had a full vinyl body, but they were a little more than I wanted to spend. I think it will work just fine!

This is going to be fun!
