I've been following this thread over at The Babywearer which links to these articles which say that folic acid supplementation may lead to things like increased cancer risk and asthma for kids and that Vitamin E may lead to heart defects. I seriously want to run screaming to the nearest cave. I take increased folic acid due to a medication that I take that decreases my ability to process folic acid. I skipped the flu shot (both of them) this year so I've been taking Vitamin E sporadically when it seems like we have the start of a cold in the house (FWIW this seems to help). I'm taking Magnesium and Vitamin C on my midwife's recommendation and I take fish oil both for my mood and to make sure there's enough omega-3.

Now I'm feeling AWFUL for taking supplements AT ALL. I thought I was trying to be healthier this pregnancy but now I'm freaking myself out. On the other hand, I really don't want to drop the things that seem to be working. ARRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I'm feeling all emotional and overwrought about this now.

Well, I'm no medical expert, but I would say don't stress out about this. Pregnant women take folic acid and vitamin E all the time and have healthy bouncing babies. Would you feel okay about taking a multi that has folic and E in it? Then maybe you won't feel like you're mega-dosing the vites?

My dear, I sooo hear you. Even if we take all the right supplements (or take no supplements and that's "right") there are a million other factors we can't control for. If you walk on a city street you breathe in the exhaust from cars which equals toxins for your body and baby. Our water has chemicals in it. Etc etc

Doing lots of internet searching for info when we are anxious doesn't help. It seems to increase it!

I really don't see how they could correlate high folic acid intake with children's asthma/cancer. That is ridiculous, IMO. Sounds like you are someone who needs the folic acid even more and I'm sure it's good for you and the baby! and the omega oils you take are surely helping developing your baby's little brain splendidly. Don't worry!

Note that the first article was written by someone who sells his own brand of supplements.

I took the max dosage of folic acid with all my pg's because of my very high risk of having a child with a neural tube defect. It is very important to get enough folic acid during the first trimester for that reason. Either by eating lots of stuff with it in there or supplements. I went with the supplements because I didnt trust that I could eat enough.
