My fil has 3.5 acres on a wooded lake lot a few miles from us. They have a small, one room fishing cottage that in the past has been rented to ice fishermen. He is very supportive of homeschooling and has offered for us to use the cottage as our own little one room school house. I don't plan on using it as a learning destination (hate the word classroom) until ds turns 6, which is in the year 2011. But, I do want to continue collecting items at thrift stores, garage sales, and sales so I don't get hit with one big price tag when we do start.

So, that said, tell me what your dream learning room looks like!

I wouldn't really want a *classroom* either, but a place to keep all the stuff might be cool! LEt's see.....

I would want lots of wall space for things like giant maps, a chalkboard (the kids really want one!) and places to hang paintings to dry.

Lots of book shelves since we have tons of books.

A storage unit (or two) for things like board games, paper, art supplies, little tiny pieces (manipulatives, beads, etc).

Lots of light.

A large table or other surface for big projects that would get wrecked in the main house.

A pencil sharpener.

Comfortable seating in case you DO want to work in there.

One that cleans itself

Floor to ceiling book shelves on one wall that are actually tall enough so I can stand my books up! (I have fixed shelves right now and I have to put half my books in sideways) One another wall would be cabinets filled with see through containers for art supplies, craft stuff, science equipment, etc. These would have doors so we could close it all off when we were done. Some comfy bean bags in the corner near the book case for reading. Big table in the middle to work on. Small desk in one corner for me to keep my "administrative" type stuff organized. An art area with a double sided easle for the boys to paint. I mini kitchenette (small sink, hot plate, mini fridge) for science experiments and art cleanup. And finally a wall to display art and projects on!

I am sure I forgot something but those are the things I would really love to have.

Bookshelves all along one wall
Another wall completely of corkboard. (my mil has this in what used to be DH's bedroom)
Lots of plastic storage bins (dishpans work great) to put on the lower shelves loaded with arts and craft supplies, learning manipulatives, books, etc.
An easel that has oneside chalk and the other wipe board
Bright paint for the accent/window walls to offset the bookshelves and cork board walls.

All that but really toddler-proofed and with a toddler play area and a computer area.

Completely dull with nothing to look at - just a comfortable table and chairs, plus a huge storage room with places for all the above mentioned things!

DS is very distractable - the less he has to make him lose focus, the better!

But hopefully your DC will enjoy a more cheerful environment!

I would like lots of shelves to place all the ongoing science experiements - the crystals and plants we are growing, rock collection we are adding to, etc.

We don't have a 'learning room' either. But here are some things I'd find useful:

-Bookshelves with lots and lots of books (readers, nonfiction, fiction, reference books, etc.)
-Maps (World, US, state) and globe
-art supplies: paint, glue, construction paper, drawing paper, crayons, colored pencils, various crafty things (we have paper plates, paper sacks, old boxes, old wrapping paper, bows, ribbons, googly eyes, TP tubes, pipe cleaners, etc.)
-comfy place to sit, such as a couch
-large work area (table) for art projects, etc
-computer with internet access
-TV with DVD player
-big sunny window for growing plants, butterfly gardens, etc.
-lots of games- card games, board games, puzzles, pattern blocks, etc.

Thanks so much for lending me your ideas! We have some big annual thrift sales coming up in September, and I wanted to have a list of things to look out for. You all really got that list going!
