Hi, I'm new to this forum and looking for Gwinnett area moms or anyone in GA that HS's their elementary age children. Dh and I have decided to pull our dd out of the public school she's been at for K-2nd and I don't even know how to pull her out lol Do I withdraw her and then send my letter of intent to the superintendent or the other way around? I have had a terrible time with this school, the teachers, administrators and especially the principal; I'm concerned that they will give me a hard time during this process. Do I have the right to her records? I know they would normally be transferred to the new school but is it different when the child is 'moving' to homeschool? I'm 99% sure that no child has been pulled out of this school (or the two closest schools) for homeschooling in the last 5 years (during the time the current office staff/administrators/principal have worked there) mainly because this school is in a fairly low income area. As of May '06 they were 70% free & reduced lunch. I don't yet have HSing resources or curriculum for a K-5 child. I am desperate for a friend or at least some advice or sharing of experiences. Right now I feel like such a failer to my daughter I don't want her to suffer at that school one more year

Can anyone help me??

Hi, I'm not in Gwinnett County, but I do homeschool. My children are under the age for declaration of intent (which wouldn't apply to you at this time anyway) but we still consider ourselves homeschoolers (well Unschoolers actually). Wait, has school started in your county yet? You may only need to do the declaration of intent form.

Check out www.heir.org They will give you all the legal info you need.

As to curriculum...do you REALLY need one? I say "no". You will definitely, though want to spend time "deschooling".

Let me know if you are interested in any support groups after you finish with the legal info

What is deschooling?? I think I need at least a guide to know what she is supposed to learn in the 3rd grade; if she were in kindergarten or younger, I know I could handel it on my own. I would love not to have to pay for the curriculum (or at least be able to buy used) what have you seen other people use? Are workbooks good enough for the foundation and then add in hands on activities/projects and fieldtrips relating to the current studies of science and social studies?
I would love to join a support group! I couldn't find any on my own.
Thanks for your help!
Oh yeah, Gwinnett starts on 8/14

If this wasn't open to the world, I might think you were stalking me LOL
Thanks for the link. I didn't think that you would still have any info since your girls are in public school now, I also forgot that you looked around for kindergarten for L when you lived here.
only 5 more weeks!? Seems like it was just Christmas Day and we were hugging and crying with excitement over the news

Definitely look into the Peach Network. It's a huge group that does parents' meetings, field trips, play/park days, used curriculum sales, etc.

I'm almost positive that since school hasn't started yet, you would just need to send in your declaration of intent and not show up on the regular day. You might want to call the school and let them know, so they can use that space for another student, though. To declare intent, just go to the County Office and they will have the info for you. All you need to do from there is take attendence-you have to do "school" 180 out of every year and she will be tested at the end of 3, 6,9 and 12th grades. The homeschool group will help you organize that.

Yep 5 weeks-and tomorrow will be just 4!
