I am a frequent member of DS and was directed over here to hopefully get some help. I am currently living in Akron, Ohio with my husband and our 4-month old son. Here is my post from DS. Thanks for any help.

We are getting ready to relocate to Detroit and we need some pointers.

My husband is going to be working on E. Jefferson in downtown Detroit and we need to find a place. We will be going up there next week to scout out apartments and will be moving anytime in the next 3-4 weeks.

We need something moderately priced but nice (as in nice neighborhood and clean apartment) and safe. We have been looking in the Royal Oak and Warren area on suggestion from one of Kevin's colleagues but I would love to hear from you.

Kevin will be working less than 2 miles from the Ambassador Bridge and we would like something within 30 minutes of the office. I personally would love to find an area that is not so crowded and has somewhat of a country feel. I know it's a long shot but a mama on here gave me some hope.

Thank you for all of the PM's. I was going to answer them but there are so many so I thought I should just post.

In case you have anything specific in mind I thought I would let you know my MUST HAVES.

New carpet
Washer/Dryer hook-ups in unit
2-3 bedroom
900+ sq. ft
Dishwasher (not a dealbreaker but close)

We've looked on rent dot com and other apartment sites but not only is it overwhelming to weed througt them all but it is not a complete list and some of them are not available. We need to make lots of appointments for the days we are going to be out there so please spam me with your knowledge.
Ridgewood Apartments in Westland, MI are single-story and really nice, with washer/dryer hookups and a dishwasher, the only thing I'm not sure about is the carpet.
Arbor Woods in Livonia might be better, I've never been inside them, and about the same price if not a little less...with washer/dryer..they look a little bit newer from the outside and almost like condos. Plus, you're right near Livonia schools and downtown Plymouth which is really cozy and family friendly.
The drive might be closer to 40 minutes from either of these two places, but you are also just a few minutes from I-96 which will take you right downtown.
Springwells Park in Dearborn is another suggestion, and also Fairlane East which is a little more pricey but also more like a condo, and you're close to Greenfield Village and Henry Ford Museum and a lot of great restaurants/shopping.
If you do a google search for any of these places you'll probably find pictures and floorplans and everything. good luck!!

Yeah...Warren is not so country-ish, and I think that Royal Oak maaaay just be out of your price range...I'm not for sure on that, but RO is the "place to be" and tends to be pricey, just 'cause they can. And it's definately NOT country-ish. That said, I live in Lake Orion, and I'm about 40 minutes up I-75 from detroit. I'm pretty darn in the country-suburbs...and there's a house right up the street from me with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, full basement, 950 square feet...for less a month than my mom's paying for her condo with 650 square feet a half mile away. (dont know how much just that she checked it out cause she isn't so happy in her tiny condo but can't break her lease, either...) Big yard, too. And in my little sub we have egrets, fox, deer, fireflies, hummingbirds, herons, finches, bluebirds. I love where we live! Too, we're about 20 minutes from our farm co-op, which is really in the country. You WON'T find that in warren!

I'd say either go south toward but not in Ann Arbor (AA itself is waaay too pricey) down 94, or go north toward Lake Orion/Clarkston for the country feel and less expensive cost of living.

I know that that is kind of general, but I hope it helps. Warren is really not country at all. It's actually packed full of homes that were built post WW-II on war bonds. Lots of big old trees and older small ranch houses, but definately NOT country-ish! If you're looking in Warren, though, you might also consider Saint Claire Shores and Roseville. THey're all the same kind of towns with small post war era homes and older neighborhoods, and pretty darned close to Jefferson, too.

Welcome to Detroit...we have a great group of mamas here, and we'll be happy to see you join us! Happy house hunting!

For country feel close to Detroit I would try Belleville. If you go due south of Detroit there are also a lot of small towns surrounded by farmland.

I'd check out the rentals in grosse pointe park - there is a section right on the GPP/detroit border with a lot of "flats" that have 2-3 bedrooms. I am not sure what your price range is but they run from $800-1200/month depending on the amenities and specific street.

grosse pointe park is literally 20 minutes up e. jefferson - my mom drove jefferson to work for over 15 years.

it doesn't have a country feel, but it is nice, safe, has good schools, and well I grew up there so I guess I am partial to it

Thanks for all of the tips. It looks like we are going to be looking South of Detroit. Maybe the Wyandotte/Southgate area, however, I am still looking into everything. I cannot wait to get up there next week and check everything out.

If you're going to look downriver (Wyandotte/Southgate) you might want to consider going further South (like 15 minutes) and that way you can get more of a country feel.. like Flat Rock/Carleton. My mom lives in Carleton and it is a 45 minute drive from Detroit, 30 minute drive to Ann Arbor. It is very country, taxes are great there and many have a few acres.

Also, don't forget about Dearborn/Dearborn Heights/Allen Park/Melvindale. Parts of Taylor aren't too bad but you have to watch which complex you get into. Belleville may work for you, it's a straight shot over 94 to work so the commute isn't bad.

Good luck!
