I just have a question... We live in florida... Lots of fire ants here! My dd is 3 and we go outside alot. She knows to stay away from ant piles.. but at the playground or around the lake she always manages to get 1 or 2 bites.

When she first got ant bites it would be a small spot .. It would blister and then go away quickly. Now if she gets stung she devolps a blister but the area around the bite becomes hard and swollen and red.

I will put a little alcohol and bacitration on them ... I am going to try a baking soda paste next time..

Anyways my question is coiuld she be devoloping an allergic reaction to the venom? I thought I remember hearing that it can happen , just wondering if you mamas have any info or advice.

thanks Melissa

Weeeeell, up here in PA, they're not exactly a concern, but we all shared the joy of being bitten by those buggers when we visited relatives in Fla last winter!!

Honestly, her reaction sounds within the range of normal, but I'm certainly no expert. Maybe she has gotten more venom in her the last couple of bites? If she was allergic, I'd think you'd see other stuff like probs with respiration and extreme swelling. I could be wrong though, but most bug/insect allergic reactions are very similar in nature as far as how they effect humans. I'm sorry you have to deal with this, though. Could you call poison control or someplace like that in your area?

I certainly don't miss those suckers since we moved from Texas. I used to react horribly to them. If I was bitten on the foot my whole foot would swell. The itch would nearly drive me mad. My chiropractor actually had me try a supplement from Standard Process. I don't remember what it was (nor would I suggest it for a kiddo) but my reaction really improved. So, I had the opposite happen, but I just wanted to say that I think you can develop worse reactions over time. Perhaps consult a homeopath on something that might be effective for a little one.
