Is anyone else's dh picking out names you absolutly hate so much you would rather gouge your eyes out with a stick than name your child that?

My dh is insisting on either Floyd (Pink Floyd) or Maynard (Lead singer of tool or something.) I have said no, no no no a thousand times over NO! Why would he want to name his child after these people? Why would he want to pick out names his child is more likely than not going to hate?

Every name I come up with he hates. Although I did come up with one last night where his answer was, "How am I going to turn that into a nick name?"
(Elizabeth is Lizard and Breanna is Ceddar.) Then he tells me that he will just call the baby Floyd no matter what I name him. Sometimes I want a big stick to hit him over the head with.
Unfortunatly I know that wouldn't do much good.

I hope my son never finds this thread... but if he does... know I love your name now!

My husband was dead set on our first son's name being Robert - that's his dad and his grandfather's name. Unfortunately, there was a Robert in my past (that went by Bobby) that abused me... so I really wasn't that thrilled with it. I conceeded because they were so important to him, but the condition was that he would be Robert - not Rob, Robbie, Bob or Bobby. We have taken to calling him Bob-Bob in the family, and that's fine... but as far as anyone else is concerned, he is Robert - just Robert.

However, he wasn't dead set on naming him after a singer (or, more likely in my husband's case, the creater of Linux or something computery). That just wouldn't have flown with me. I think the conversation would have gone something like "we're naming a child - not a pet. This person has to live with this name for the rest of their life, got it?" I don't have advice for you on this one - but I will agree that your hubby is being kinda childish about naming your HUMAN!

My husband teases me about names a lot. The newest one is "Otis" which is now the baby's nickname. Don't get me wrong, I love Otis Redding but I'm not ready to name my child after him.

If he's serious about Floyd or Maynard because the music means a lot to him maybe there's a song title or part of a lyric that could substitute.

heheheheh I had to laugh at this.

I thought dh and I were never ever going to agree on a boys name, so jokingly a friend and I came up with the most old-fashioned, crusty English name that we could think of, just to see how he'd react: Arthur Frank

HE LIKED IT

Thank goodness I was able to convince him otherwise...he may have been sleeping in the car!

went through the same thing with my dh. we started picking out names when I was 6 months preggers and we hadn't had a name until a week after she was born! we just could not agree. He did this every time we got pregnant! I won't go into the name choices he picked (which i loathed!)because someone might have those names on this board-don't want to be rude. But they were awful! He didn't like the names I wanted either and I am still upset i didn't get to name my girls,--sasha,lily and bella
he hated those names!

My Dh picks some of the most God awful names IMO. I absolutely dread the naming process with each baby cause he makes it so hard. some of the names he says are joking, but other are not. And when you're really getting down to that last couple weeks and he's still throwing the jokey names out, i just want to smack him.

Coming up with names is doubly (is that even a word??) hard for my partner and I. We have to come up with something that works in English and Swedish. Automatically names that start with a J are out, they cannot pronounce a J here. Then there is the way they say some names. I really like Simon but in Sweden it is pronounced more like seamon. Ewww. I also like Jude but it not only has the J but Jude means Jew in Swedish.

Last pregnancy dh came up with Nero for a boy and was dead set on it. Thank heavens we didn't have a boy. This time he's coming up with the most foul girl names and he tells me the names I come up with are too hippy.

Last time my sister suggested the name we ended up using two days before the planned section. She's thinking of names now and our dd has come up with a girl name I really like. I think she made it up.

DH has a friend named Justin that moved to Russia for a bit and got married. He had to start using his middle name (which I don't remember but starts with an A) there. Even when he moved his family back to the US his wife still calls him by his middle name.

Anyway, I have just started calling the baby Alex.
(BTW we know this one is a boy.
) Every once in awhile he will say, "I am calling him Floyd" but other than that hasn't said he hates or dislikes the name. He doens't even say anything about the fact that the girls have started calling him "baby Alex."

So I think I at least have a first name.

hahaha - gen_here, the creator of Lunix is a Finish guy named Linus Thorvaldsen. Lovely, open OS. Maybe our husbands ought to get together? Though I prefer the name Apple, after the superior OS.

Sunshine Girl - same problem here: Danish/American. So we each go through a print out of the Danish registry of names, secretely pick out the top 10 or 20 that we each like. Then we trade lists and say the names out loud. Like you said, Simon is totally different, so then we cut it, unless we both like it AND it is pronounceable in both languages. Is Annika spreading like wildfire over there? I am seriously considering it, but not if 20 other kids will have the same name in her class.

I only know 2 Annikas - one is my age (close to 30) and the other is 6 or 7... both are in Illinois =)

A previous co-worker of mine named her baby girl Annika! My mom's side comes from Sweden and I just love the name! The lady calls her "Annie" all the time though. Her baby is now a toddler. I had never heard of the name before she chose it and I haven't heard of it since... except for that famous golf lady.

Here the popular names are Emma and Emilie. I'm quite sure if you go to a playground and yell Emma or Emilie in a Swedish accent half the girls will turn around. I like those names but it is way too popular here. Wilma is also making a come back.

Annika....it might be becoming more popular here. There is a HUGE baby boom going on in Sweden these days. You can't go anywhere without seeing at least five pregnant women. American names are popular here even if they can't properly be pronounced. There was a little boy named Keith but all the Swedish people pronounced it Keet.
: eeeeek! Also popular to use American nicknames as proper names. Dh's brother is Ronnie.

For me, I keep thinking we have decided something, then dh turns around and says that he doesn't agree- just as if our earlier agreement never happened. I keep wondering if it is his way of the compromise going more towards he wants. That way he just starts renegotiating from the compromise.

I love reading everyone's name ideas!

I'm still a bit torn on the boy name, but I think we have a good agreement on the girl name. First I will tell you that Carly Mae is our dd's name...I wanted 'Rae' he wanted 'Mae' and he won that one. We had a boy name picked out for her, and it is the same boy name we have picked out for this one. I'm still not sure about it...it is Tyler Julian (Julian is my maiden name)...call him TJ. It just sounds to ...well...plain to me.
Originally for my dd I wanted Sunny. S-U-N-N-Y. Not Suni (with an asian flair) and not the masculine Sonny (come here sonny boy!) I just knew we would have a blonde with blue or green eyes and I LOVED the name. No one else seems to use it either. But alas, DH wasn't having it...I tried again with this baby, and still a NO GO. We named our dd Carly since we loved Kylie, but everyone was using it in CA at the time and we wanted to name her after a music person--so Carly Simon is it!

This baby will either be TJ (see above) if it's a boy, or KYLE for a girl. KYLE RENEE. That is spelled and sounded out like the masculine name, Kyle. The name Renee is from the song called Walk away Renee by The Left Banke in 1966. http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=411

I love Kyle since 1 it is different, and 2 it has a masculine sound.

It's comforting to me, Bobbi, that someone else is recycling their unused name from last time. A bunch of my friends on my journaling site just did a little quiz thing about names... what their name would have been if they were born male (all that did it were female), what their kids' names are - and what they would have been if they were born the opposite sex, etc.

Not a single one of the many that answered the thing had "recycled" their other-gender name from a previous baby. It was like #1 was William, but would have been Jennifer, #2 was Daniel, but would have been Renee, #3 was Anna, but would have been Michael.

I thought maybe we were breaking some unspoken rule about no re-using names. If this baby is a girl, she'll have the same name my son would have had (but with an extra middle name since we like the 2 middle name thing now that we did it by we-can't-decide-default with my son).

If our first son had been a girl our name was going to be Samantha. I still love that name, especially for the nickname Sam.
We know this one is a boy too though, so we don't get to name recycle this time.
I'm having a hard time picking another boys name with DH. He is next to impossible, as he likes almost nothing!
