DH is coming around

We live in Germany where homeschooling is illegal, and in any case , I am having a hard time convincing DH of the merits of homeschooling.

Anyway, we will soon move to another city in Germany that is just on the French border. I told Dh tonight that I was worried about staying in Germany because DS1 will be required by law to start school fall 2005. He said, "well, we will just move across the border to France so he won't have to".

Dh is still not 100% on board with homeschooling, but at least he's willing to give it a try now. He's worried that we (read I) won't be able to educate the children successfully and that DS will end up having to enroll in first grade when he is 8 years old. I'm not worried. I know my children are very bright and are learning every day.

My dh came around slowly too. The first time I brought it up he didn't think it was a good idea at all (and he usually leaves all kid decisions to me.) A year later, he was willing to "give it a try" with our oldest. Couple months later we were planning on hsing our second child as well. After that, it was just assumed that our 3rd would be hsed and that it would be for as long as they wanted it.
Good luck!

It is hard to accept new ideas and go against the crowd. Good for you to do what you feel is best for your children. Continue to help your dh learn about the benefits of hs-sounds like he doesn't need much more convincing

Wow, that is outrageous that homeschooling is illegal there! Is there no opposition to this law? Any underground homeschooling groups? What are the penalties for opting out?
This is the main reason why I would not move back to Germany
I love hs'ing our son but do miss Germany at times- we do go home at times but can not stay for more then 6 month or he could be forced to go to school over there.
I'm so glad that you decided to go against the crowd and do it- what are the laws in France? Are they strict ?

It starts out with a writen warning and then a fine. Worst case scenerio ..... they will take custody away from you. People have fleed the country in the middle of the night there with their children and went to Austria b/c the officials where on the way

It also depents to a point where you live...I heard that the worst harrasment is in Bavaria.

Homeschooling is legal in France although not many people do it. The law simply states that children must be educated and there are several options for home education. I believe it is necessary to formally declare that your children will be educated at home. You can either follow the state curriculum or choose from other curriculums such as Montessori or Waldorf. I'm not sure if unschooling is an possibility.
