Ok, my dd is almost a year and here is our problem. She hates diaper changes. Now, I know this happens to a lot of kids, so I don't feel it's unusual. She mostly just hates having to lie down and be still. This is problem #1. We often change her while she stands up holding onto something.
But, in order to properly clean inside the folds of her gentials, she needs to be laying down, so I try to do a couple lay-down changes a day, plus whenever she poops. Here's problem #2:
She really hates it when I try to clean around her vulva. She holds her legs closer together so I can't clean her. I don't want to force myself, because I think that could cause psychological and sexual problems when she's older. But I also feel I need to keep her clean. Any ideas on how else I could clean her?
Thanks,
Pam

I used a hand held shower head to rinse dd when she went through this stage. I used a gentle spray on luke warm and she didn't complain. I also do this for ds now that we have a hand held shower head here once in a while when a nasty poo.

I'm sure you've tried this, but when DD is fiesty about a change, I give her something that's normally a big like diaper cream to play with. For fast cleaning, I use a squirt bottle and squirt my solution directly onto her. That way, I don't spend quite as long wiping her (kind of like a little bidet). But, my DD doesn't mind being wiped to begin with, so I'm not sure if it would work for you.

Definitely try a special toy just for diaper changes. MY DS loves stuff off the changing table -- bottles of lotion, the wipes container, etc. Or a book will sometimes work as well.

I try to make sure dd has a bath every other day and I scrub her good during that time. But if she has a poopy and it gets into the folds she will fight me tooth and nail. She's too old for distraction at age 2, so I just tell her that her "chee-tha" is dirty and I have to clean it or it will start to itch. Then I hold her legs down and open with my legs and just do it real fast. I don't think I'm traumatizing her, it's a power struggle with her, but I figure me wiping her quick against her will is better than a yeast infection.

Can you start letting her clean herself? She won't do a *great* job, but if you let her have a turn before you, she may be more willing to let you have a turn as well.

With my 3 year old, I just spray her off in the shower every morning (since the only time she every really "sits" in pee is overnight), and then she takes a bath or shower at least a couple of times a week on top of that.
