I thought I had it all figured out with the sergers. I have scoured every post and done lots of research on what to buy, but again, am confused. I had just about decided on the White 2000. I want a machine that will sew through multiple layers of hemp fleece to make the soakers and I don't need much in the way of fancy extras. I went to my local sew shop to try it out and the lady did not think it would hold up to that. She said it might sew through it, but would not hold up for long as it would be hard on the machine. The only other machines they sell are Elnas. She did not give a hard sell at all, but said of the machines they sell I would need one of the Elnas (starting about $700) to sew on that. I brought a sample of fabric and it sewed three layers beautifully. I wonder what those of you who make hemp and sherpa diapers use?

I can't find a price for these on the web. Do you know what they run? Also, the the Berninas have a free arm?

Thanks mamas for your input. This really helps .

Zanymom, thanks for the link. Did not even think of looking there. I had scoured every serger post in this forum .

OK mamas, I have narrowed it down. ANy unput? My choices are (as they are in my price range)
Viking Husvarna Huskylock 905 (the most expensive, but I think I can get it for $400)
Juki 654 DE (also looked at the 644, but assumed it is a step below and can afford to go up to this one)
Janome 634D (maybe not enough machine?)
Janome 744D

I am still considering Berninas, but can't find any prices yet so don't know if they are a good choice. I want a free arm so lmk if you know that any of the above don't have them. From my research I am thinking the Viking will be the most durable, but not sure on that.
