Hi all -

Wanted to tap into the wisdom here on this topic. My girlfriend's 2 year old recently was diagnosed "on the spectrum". As part of their analysis of this whole issue - they had an organic acid test done . . . here is what she emailed me on their suspicions about his language and social development problems:

"We also had an organic acid test done (urine specimen, so not hard to collect) and found out that DS has a yeast problem in his intestine... our theory is that antibiotics (which he only took 2x) killed the good bacteria, which then allowed yeast to overgrow. The yeast eroded his intestine, which then allowed the gluten and casein proteins to leak through into his bloodstream and go to his brain, thus affecting his language and social development (basically triggering his autism)."

They have taken their DS off dairy and gluten and feel they are getting good results. I wanted to poll the community here to see if others have had similar testing/suspicions around diary and gluten? Is it a theory that any feel strongly about or could share any info/articles, etc. on?

I ask because another friend is also dealing with 2 of her kids on the autism spectrum - and I've mentioned this diet issue to her. She seems curious - but I don't want to push - I'd just like to get some more info for her and get a sense of what other mothers in this community think about this matter.

thanks in advance

the best information on this is all over the web..but, I highly recommend the book by Karen Seroussi..Unraveling the Mystery of Autism and Pervasive Develpmental Disorder: A Mother's Story of Research and Recovery.

This single book made me realize we had to remove Casein and Gluten from my sons diet immediately. We've had very good results..he couldn't feel pain before, he can now. He was self stimulating constantly..he doesn't need to do as much now..it's so much less it's remarkable. There are a lot of other biomedical things you can do, but the yeast is a big piece of the puzzle for a lot of asd parents..we plan to have Eli's urine tested soon For right now he is doing some chelation stuff with epsom salt and monday he starts methyl b12 shots.

Another good resource is the Defeat Autism Now organization..I'm sure you can google that

My son has autism and celiac disease--he has been on a gluten free diet since he was 6 months old...it didn't help him much in terms of his autistic behaviors because at 3 years old, he was diagnosed moderately autistic. But it did help with his poor weight gain, tendency towards failure to thrive, reflux, constant screaming, and eczema.

Both of my ASD kids have been doing the DAN protocol which incldues dealing with leaky gut. In fact, that is the first step in the protocol - to heal the gut so the body can breakdown and absorb necessary nutrients and prevent those natrual morphines from wheat and dairy to pass from teh gut intot eh blood stream. My ids responded very well and have been making tremendou progress. However, their issues aren't just gut related. That have heavy metal poisoning and we are chelating them. You can provide your friend with some of the links below for her research.

I am so glad Jenni posted the links (I would have done it but I love that I don't have to!). I also wholeheartedly recommend the Karen Seroussi book.

We had the whole shebang done with our DAN last year, and he promptly directed us to the gf/cf diet. But truthfully, it just wasn't feasible for us. I totally believe it is legit, but it just wasn't for us. (There are also compelling reasons to believe this DAN is not the most altruistic, which is a whole different story.)

But what we did take from all of the research is enzyme therapy. The whole family takes probiotics every day, and enzymes with every meal (well, ds does. The rest of us are more-or-less). I absolutely believe that healing the gut will heal the person - regardless of being on the spectrum. 70% of the immune system is in the gut.

And the only other site I can recommend (luckily from memory ) is the worldwide forum www.autismweb.com . There is a biomedical room that is a great resource - especially if you use the search function.

Interesting thread.

DD's PT brought up the GF diet. DD has low tone and associated delays.
He thinks it will help her focus and stamina.
I wonder, b.f committing to such a change, is there a bloodtest or some type of screening to detect the need for this diet?

Thanks in advance.
Just to add one mroe thing about enzymes - there is a company called Houston Nutraceuticals that makes an enzyme called AFP Peptizyde that is used to replace the gfcf diet. It breaks down the wheat and dairy protiens completely.

I just wanted to add a comment about DAN only that granolamomma is right that some DAN docs may not have the best interest of the child at hand...and these are DAN docs that are purely in it for the money. However, there are alot of reputable DAN docs who have their own children on teh spectrum who are in this because they believe in it. Also , each DAN doc is different. Some focus more on holistic practices and others don't. You just have to do a lot of research. Sorry for going OT, just wanted to comment on this.
