Stainless steel is a great option. It's not cheap initially, but you really don't need a lot of them. We use a set from lifewithoutplastic.com and have been very happy with them. And they are stellar for banging!

As for utensils, I just use our regular stainless steel adult size - dd is 9 months and it's worked well so far.

I bought some enamel wear from www.peak62.com in a great lime/avocado color. the 7 in plate & I think it was the 2oz cup (smallest one) are perfect, but the smallest bowl is a little big. I love it any way. Much cheaper than the expensive enamel 'kids' sets

DD has a Bunnikins porcelain (or china?) bowl, which is very heavy and sturdy, as well as another china bowl, with dancing mice on. We eat with her, so we have a few times prevented it from falling on the floor, but mostly it is fine, so far.

We also use these and love them. DD sits for almost a half-hour in complete rapture while she chews her spoon, which means we actually get to eat dinner together now.

Pyrex or Anchor Hocking ramekins w/ a SS demitasse spoon worked very well, for us. At 22 mo, DD eats uses the Fiesta Dinnerware and small SS forks and spoons.
