i was wondering if it is true that you waste alot LESS energy and water by using a dishwasher than you do by washing by hand. is this true? anyone have one for these reasons? if not, why not?
we are moving and there is a space in the kitchen for one...don`t know whether to put something else inthere, or buy one...
thanks!

When I stopped using my dishwasher I started saving $50 on my electricty bills a month! Now I wash all my dishes by hand.

I never fill my small sink more than half full with water (about 2 gallons) and I use a biodegradeable dish soap Biovert that doesn't need to be rinsed off. My energy to wash the dishes is renewable and free.

I vote use the space for something else.

ETA: I also cook and bake a lot so I can fill a dishwasher 2x a day. I always had to wash big bowls and pots in the sink anyways so I might as well use the water to wash all the dishes instead of just a few, yk?
It *really* depends... on how you hand-wash, the setting on your water heater, the type of soap you use, the brand of dishwasher, how often you run it, whether you pre-rinse, etc. There is no YES or NO answer that fits all situations.
ok. i use very little water while hand washing. always cold, never hot. if something is very sticky, then y boil it. we are only 2 adults and 1 child. but i cook alot and feel like i`m in the kitchen all day!
i`ll wait for more options, thanks!
Wow. Dishes in cold water
I'm impressed!

'Green-wise' sounds like your doing about as good as is possible.

For me, however, I am wishing so badly for a Bosch, they are AMAZING! They have a 1/2 rack option that uses 1.5 gallons, you don't have to rinse and the food collects in a basket in the bottom that you can empty into the compost, they have an on-demand water heater inside that is very efficient (this is where others really fail in the energy department), and they work REALLY well.

I would love to say that I really thought that I was doing the 'greenest' thing by using a dishwasher but I think your system sounds really good.

Once you've considered the soap, water, and energy consumption... if you get a dishwasher you also need to consider the manufacturing/ transport of the washer and the waste it creates.

I have made the decision to use a dishwasher for my own happiness

However:
I only use it when it is TOTALLY full (and I can really fill a dishwasher!)
I don't use water for rinsing, just scrape off the big chunks
I don't use the "heat dry" cycle
I use biodegradable detergent
I spend the time that I would otherwise would be doing dishes doing something positive, not just watching tv

I agree, it totally depends on your situation.
I think dishwashers are savers if you have one that can fit your families entire dishes for the day and you only run it once a day when it's full (the newer models are better for this because you can fit so much into them - even pots and pans). I also run my dishwasher at night when energy/water is cheaper. I use homemade dishwasher soap and vinegar in the JetDry compartment. I never use hightemp wash or rinse and never use heated dry. I also set it for the shortest cycle possible on my machine and don't rinse the dishes before hand. I feel like this is the better option for my family, given that I cook and bake alot and this would mean SEVERAL loads of dishes per day (like 6-8) if I was doing them by hand.

washing with cold water is such a big deal? i`ve never washed with warm water.

anyway, i´m gonna look for the braun washer you mention, here in chile.
thanks
Our dishwasher is broken at the moment and I have been considering the OP's question as I do the dishes each night.

Even being mindful, I seem to use so much water and detergent doing the dishes by hand.
someone wrote that she uses a dishwasher for her happiness...i think i second that! i`ve been in the kitchen all day!!!!!!!!
I love my dishwasher

I know that it is the best choice for me. I run it once per day and I use green detergent in it. I was without it for about 2 months after it got fried due to a lightning strike. We don't use disposable anything, so that left me with LOTS of dishes and cooking utensils to wash. That was when I realized that my happiness depends upon my dishwasher

I absolutely hate to see dishes piled up on the counters or in the sink. I feel an intense need to clean them up immediately after they are used. I can put the dirty dishes in the dishwasher and still feel like they are cleaned up and not cluttering my kitchen. I know it's best to let them sit around all day and then clean everything at one time. Unfortunately, that is not something I can do. So, that is the reason that I will never again live without my dishwasher.

I had a dishwasher in my last apartment, but our current house doesn't have one. I thought I would hate not having a dishwasher. But to be honest, I don't even miss it. Now washing the dishes is time that DH and I have to chat together in the evening - I kinda like it.

That said, I keep our water heater on the lowest setting, use very little water, and use biodegradable soap. I also only wash once a day (unless it's baking day) So I feel like washing by hand is "greener" for me.

sure, if you only wash once a day then i would go by hand...but i feel like i`m washing all damn day. sorry...i`m tired. it was cooking and baking morning... i want a dishwasher.
the same thing happens to me, i hate dishes pilling up, so i wash them inmediatle after we eat, anything...
can`t find the braun washer you mention. can you help me out? what should i look for in a dishwasher? thanks!
for me it's a time saver as the last thing i want to do is wash dishes at the end of the nite. i run it every 2-3 days as it's just dd and I. i use ecover but i do have to run it on the pots and pans setting as my dishwasher in my apt sucks!

The brand that we were talking about was Bosch. Here is the website with their dishwashers.

I would look for:
one that WORKS and you don't have to rise first
a filter that is removable and cleanable (doesn't have to be replaced when it gets clogged)
some sort of filter/grinder system for dealing with food particles (so you don't have to rinse)
1/2 load option
efficient water heating system (most just splash water around on a heating element, very inefficient)
racks that can accommodate what you want to wash
low water and energy usage
quiet (but most that are E efficient are quiet since noise is a waste of E)

humm... I know there's more

ok, so i was looking in the wrong place. bosch, i`ll look today. but i saw some bosch and they don`t have the small load option, just a normal big dishwasher
thanks for the input

Would you mind sharing the dishwasher soap recipe you use to make yours? TIA

We have a dishwasher that is energy efficient and I feel it works best for us - but I would use my ENJO dishcloths and cold water as a second choice. When our power was out last week that is what I did and also when we go camping. They require almost no water and does a fantastic job.
the dishwasher space is now holding baskets of fruit!
