Hi there! Ive been in major research mode for a while now. We started out after her dx with chewable vitamins and flax oil. No change although she slept better? We started the gf/cf diet then, and some major changes in her behavior resulted. Those hours-long crying frustrations ended, and well as her self stimulation - she had been touching her face and arms since maybe a year. {she still needs stims but doesnt do it to herself - we play sensory games and such.} Then we added B6/mag, with no changes after 2 months. So I took that out because of my own dislike for some of the ingredients. Then we started DMG. We got it in a liquid form from kirkman. She has had some major improvements in her speech! She still is very hard for anyone else to understand but now she's talking a lot more and trying new words!!! She seems to accept transtions more as well.

I don't know if you've seen these already but this one explains the benefits seen by some who've used dmg:

And this one talks about implementing the use of DMG:

I know that supplements don't work for everybody - but this works for us!

thanks guys

its always good to hear that there are things out there that people have found helpful.
ive tried dha (in oil form) but that was a serious no-go. i dont know how to get him to take that..oh well. i think they do make a powdered form, and if so i will try that.
i read about dmg in a book, also super-nuthera which i really want to order soon!!
i think the dmg has pros and cons, because ds does seem a bit more..go-go-go after it,and will stay up endless hours (which he does anyway though..) but its my hope that if thats being caused by the dmg, that the super nuthera may just help to tone that down,as well as just plain being good to give to him.

he and i actually had a conversation sat. morning..he only said no,but at the right times, right tones, and it wasnt just him echoing me. it was odd,yet wonderful. like passing by a beautiful tree, noticing how nice it was,but never expecting it to say anytihng..then it surprises you by saying hello and asking how youre doing today. i know that sounds sappy and stupid but its true..it was..eerie,and sweet..i guess the word im looking for is "shocking". and he doesnt jump up and down screaming and crying if we leave the room now,or if he spills something.

that is so cool!!!! I have not noticed any change in my dd's sleep - she goes down earliest around here, at 10;30 or something when my ds will stay up til 12'30 or 1 sometimes. Last week we had another breakthrough that i think dmg played a part in: she spilled all her beads that she was making a necklace out of, and instead of a raging tantrum she screamed and ran over to me crying and said" mommy I dropped all the beads on the floor. celia cry{ing}" Thats the most words she's ever said at once! and I think she's more understandable now too.

the super nu thera stuff is supposedly excellent - but its sooo expensive that we bought animal parade vits and supplement calcium and such to it. much cheaper.

WOW!! that is so amazing..congratulations mama!!

so great to hear of her being much calmer about the bead spilling (like i said,i understand that one..my son will spill something and cry so hard about it while rubbing his hand through it,wishing it hadnt happened and wanting to put it back and having a hard time moving past it and going back to playing..or used to!! it really is soooo much better now..) i really hope we get to the point where he saids more words/sentences too..right now he has no,uh oh,and oh no..sometimes daddy..and he will sometimes try out new things but we arent always sure and they dont always stick around, and i may be forgetting some..but heres hoping for many more!! congrats again..i know it must feel so good to hear her voice
and i hope she continues to do well too!! oh,and about sounding more clear,i think we also got a glimpse of ds' voice the other day..it was just..somehow very dif.,it was still only "uh oh",but there was just something about it. also,we use animal parade too..i think..kind of old milk bottle shaped, fairly thick, medium red and sort of raspberry smelling?? it doesnt seem as offensive smelling/tasting as a lot of others weve tried.

I read that if you see hyperactivity while using DMG to try adding folic acid and that should help. I beleive I read this on ARI's website.
We are doing the gfcf diet and also corn and soy free. I asked our DAN practioner about flax seed oil and he said it is sometimes hard for kids with enzyme issues to break down flax seed. I will have to research that one a little more.
Check out this website.

I have learned so much from downloading these videos. They are from the spring 2005 Defeat Autism Now conference in Chicago.
come to think of it, we use the dmg w/ folinic acid and b12.
kirkman labs.

re: flax seed oil, I wish we could afford the high quality fish oils, that have been tested free of mercury but I cant. Ive heard that about flax oil before too. But hey, I figure even if she doesnt get all the nutrients at least she must get some. She just chews up the flax oil capsules like they're nothin!

thats a cool link- do you think it would work w/ a dial-up? I like the DAN protocol and the ARI too. Very helpful and informative, I get their newsletter as well.
We used TMG instead of DMG when Cam was in a really rough period about 17 months ago.
