I've never CD'd a newborn, but I'm getting ready to do so in October. My sister is letting me borrow her newborn stash: 12 kissaluvs 0s and 6 Thirsties x-small covers. I'd like to add some of my own things to the stash to make it bigger (I do currently wash diapers daily-- it's turned out to be a good routine for us-- but I'm worried 12 might not be enough for even 1 day around here, since my newborns have always had the tendency to poop almost every time they nurse) and now I'm just trying to figure out what to get.

I don't have a lot of $$ to spend, so initially I'd thought I would just get a dozen unbleached indian prefolds. But I LOVE the kissaluvs colors and we've never done prefolds around here (even though I do feel up for the challenge, I'm not sure my husband will feel quite so thrilled about it!) so then I started thinking that maybe I'll get a bunch of kissaluvs contours, a couple snappis, and a couple more covers instead. I think the contours would be less intimidating to my husband and-- gosh!-- I just think they're so soft and sweet!

Has anyone ever used contours (particularly kissaluvs) on newborns? Do they work? Are they too hard to get a good fit? For what it's worth, I don't anticipate a small baby-- probably between 8 and 9lbs.

*eta* What about GMD Cloth-eeze prefold-fitted diaper? or GMD infant fitted diaper? Both are $7.95, which is still significantly cheaper than buying kissaluvs 0s, but I think my husband would still agree (he really doesn't want to do prefolds). Has anyone used these? Are the prefold-fitteds as big as they sound (10-20lbs)?

Thanks!

Contours w/o elastic (KL's) do not hold NB poop. I got a dozen Imse Vimse NB contours (they DO have elastic around the legs) and they worked really well.

We had 6 NB covers and it was a good number for us. FWIW, my DS was 8 lbs 11 oz at birth and was out of his whole NB stash by 3 weeks old (probably 10 lbs) and now at nearly 2 months (and probably 13 lbs) he is almost out of his smalls. We did great with some cheep covers, prefolds and the contours at first.

Did you get the organic cotton flannelette or terry Imse Vimse contours?

Also, did you find you needed a snappi to get a good fit, or did having a snug wrap cover do the trick?

(I'm not sure what to expect for growth post-birth from this baby. My first 2 grew pretty fast: 3-4lb gain in 8 weeks. But my last 2 grew very slowly: .5-1lb gain in 8 weeks. On the off-chance that I get another slow-grower, I want a decent newborn stash, especially since I can let my sister use my stuff whenever she has another baby!)

I had the flannel ones. Snappies don't work on them. i had planned to add a piece of fabric to them so I could use a snappi, but baby came a little early so I made due. I had prowraps (5) and a BSWW (1) and they all worked well. I think the terry is more absorbent, but i just added a small washcloth to the flannel ones as a booster and it worked. I got the diapers from the imse vimse outlet (they were used) for $1 each, very worth it.

Also we had 36 NB prefolds. Once one was not absorbent enough, I trifolded one into another one and it worked beautifully. i got the prefolds from a co op for $6/ dozen

I only have ever had one contour and even though my ds is older now, I have never cared for it. I feel like fitteds hold things in much better and even prefolds hold stuff better. NNo elastic in the one I have...elastic is my friend.

Having never used either prefolds or contours, I really am curious as to why prefolds are able to contain better; they seem pretty comparable to me. But I do lack experience (having only used fitteds and pockets) and am all for learning all I can before I buy anything!

I just posted about this in another thread, but what about having your prefolds converted into prefitteds (just like the Imse Vimse contours with elastic in the legs, but made from your prefold material)? A wonderful MDC mama just did this for me and I LOVE them. PM me if you want her info. You could save yourself a lot of money and have some great-fitting, easy to put on, easy to clean dipes.
