Hi there,

I've never posted here before and was wondering if anyone had any advice. My son was born 5 weeks ago, and it seems like the diapers aren't working as well as they did with my daughter. I'm not even sure what to call the kind I use, I think they're birdseye prefolds if I remember correctly. They're made by Gerber and we bought them at Babies'R'Us for my daughter. I also use the plain old elasticized vinyl pants that you can also buy there with safety pins. Nothing fancy, and I don't want to put a lot of time, thought, or money into my system.

But...they seem to be leaking more than they used to. This baby is a lot bigger and pees a lot, but he leaks through almost every night, and that's only in the 3-4 hours he sleeps. Any advice?

It's probably not the diapers, but your son that is different. Most likely he pees a lot more than your daughter did. Gerber prefolds don't have the best absorbency and they may not be able to handle your son's output. Have you thought about Chinese prefolds? They really aren't that expensive, can be used with your current vinyl pants and pins, and absorb a heck of a lot more than the Gerber ones.

Gerber prefolds have polyester in them, Poly is NOT absorbant. I would go for chinese or indian prefolds. I have used only chinese and I still grab for them after 3 years(same ones) They are just starting to show wear.

Good Luck

Everything loses absorbency over time ...every time you wash and dry your diapers fibers break away and fill up the lint trap in your drier stealing absorbency from them ... your ds also probably pees a lot differently than your dd did as well which is something I'm learning the hard way as well .... my ds is 10 weeks old and his overnight diapers (4-6 hours) are saturated to leaking in the front and totally dry in the back ... I'm finding I have to pad his diapers in the front a TON to keep him dry at night (or during the long sleeps which STILL don't always line up with my own bed time!) I have few excellent fitteds that work great though including a couple of first class baby nightlights, a couple of little beetles with doublers, and some of my own diapers.

If you LOVE your prefolds I say invest some $ into some 100% cotton diaper service quality (DSQ) or chinese (CPF's) prefolds ... you'll find they'll work better because of the cotton content (no polyester) ... I find unbleached to be a bit more absorbent and softer than bleached as well.
