My 11-month-old wears FB and HH and I'm super pleased with how easy it is to CD with them. I was planning to get the same for my newborn, but seeing how expensive pockets are and knowing how fast they'll be outgrown, I was thinking why not try fitteds? I know prefolds are really the cheapest way to go, but I already tried that and I just couldn't figure out how to fold them correctly. I also never got the hang of the snappies either. They were always popping off.
The thing is, is that I want to do everything possible to ensure breastfeeding goes right. With pockets, I can take out the insert and pretty much know how much the baby peed, which is going to be important to make sure baby's getting adequate intake. Would I be able to with fitteds too?
Sorry if this is too gross of a question!

Oh, yes, they do, it is really easy to tell how much the baby peed.

And they are good at preventing breastfed babies' poopy explosions too.

We also started CDing for the first time with an older baby. We are expecting again and will be CDing from the start.
I have no experience with diapers other than FB and HH, as we loved them also, but I just wanted to tell you what we are doing this time around to get through the early stages. See, last time we bought our diapers new from a WAHM in the area, but have sinced realized there are a ton of used pocket diapers out there! This time, we're slowly stocking up throughout the pregnancy on used FB and the like, and when we're done, we are confident we can resell them for close to what we paid (minus wear and age insomuch as they affect value). We are going to try some fitted and covers this time, but just a few, and mainly so that I can use the awesome wool sugarpeas covers I love so much. I just wanted to let you know that it doesn't have to cost a ton to use diapers you love.
Sorry for being a little off-topic, but your situation sounded much like mine.

Absolutely! Even better than pockets, in my opinion, since you don't have to take out the insert to check. I love fitteds because I can tell when my dd is wet really easily, which means that I can get a fresh diaper on her as soon as possible.

I'm also building up a newborn stash, and it's going to be mainly fitteds and prefolds. After cd'ing an older baby (and trying out lots of the fancy, expensive diapers), I've realized that cheaper - even used diapers - work just fine!

For what it's worth, I've never found it necessary to know how much my kid peed into a particular diaper in order to ensure they were getting enough to eat -- I just counted the number of diapers I changed in a day.

But as others have said, it will be obvious with fitted diapers how much the child is peeing.

Personally, I'm a prefold user.
