I should know the answer to this, but ... I don't. I was injected with some "contrast" for a MRI yesterday. I checked with a lactation consultant (that uses Hale's) and for the med used, its not safe to breastfeed for 24 hours. Ds is almost 4 and only nurses a couple of times in 24 hours, so its not like I need to pump for comfort ... but is it necessary to pump to "clear out" the med? I tried, but only got 20ml
TIA

Hmmm...that's a good question! My guess is that if you wait 24 hours it will clear out of your body but I don't know. What does your LC say?

It was after hours when I got around to trying to pump my meager supply (ds assures me he gets more when he nurses than what I got when I pumped...). Its a moot point now, as ds nursed to sleep last night (32 hours after injection) and back to sleep this a.m. I hope its ok!

In general, if a drug or contrast agent is eliminated from the body, it's eliminated by the kidney. The time frame they give is usually the point at which most of the drug/agent is excreted. That would mean it's not circulating in your body to get inot your breast milk...does that make sense?
I think you were okay to nurse your dc when you did...

Thanks for the link. The LC was using Hale's, which I understand to be a good resource. I had checked with a couple of different places that do MRI's and the one my insurance covered used an injectable contrast that Hale's said was a 24-hour-wait. The place that wasn't on my insurance used a contrast med that Hale's said may NOT be necessary to wait 12-24 hours. Wouldn't you know?! Insurance - grrr. That's a whole 'nother thread!!!

I didn't ask what edition of Hale's she used. And I didn't see the contrast agent that was used on me (gadoversetamide injection) in any of the links on kellymom. The package insert recommends pumping and dumping for 72 hours; the LC said 24 hours, so that's what I went with. I'm just glad its over!!!
