And if I do, can I sub some Dr. Bronner's magic soap? I'm out of detergent and need to run a load of dishes. What else can I use in place of detergent? I have pretty hard water. I know dish liquid will suds like mad if I use too much - can I use just a little bit? How much? Other ideas? Can I just run the dishwasher with no soap?

Running with no soap is worth a try.

When I have to handwash one or two dishes, I often forgo the soap and just rub them with a cloth under running water until they're clean. (Or look clean, depending on your point of view.)
