Do the nuts HAVE to be raw, organic etc for crispy nuts?

610 Views 9 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  mamabohl
I finally got around to making crispy nuts. Love em! Yum! However, I just cannot afford to be making them with the price of organic raw nuts. Especially with dh student teaching and no income coming in! I was wondering how bad it would be to make them from just regular nuts at the grocery store. You know...non-organic and probably not even raw. Is this a bad idea? I may just have to do without....

Thanks!

I have made them with non-organic raw ones...couldnt afford the organic ones either. I love crispy almonds!!
It's pointless to do the crispy nut thing on already roasted nuts. Doing the soaking and drying is to deactivate the enzyme inhibitors in the nuts by tricking them into starting to grow...if they've already been roasted it's too late. The nut is dead.

So if you have budget constraints, go for raw but not neccesarily organic.

They have to be raw to sprouts so that is the basic necessity.
Any tips on where to get non-organic raw nuts? They don't seem to exist. The normal grocery stores don't carry raw.....

Do you have any stores that sell bulk items? There are a couple of stores near me that sell raw nuts in bulk -- they are the healthy grocery stores though like Whole Foods, Sprouts and Trader Joes(though TJ isn't bulk, they have bags of non-O nuts).

Our Costco carries raw almonds in a 3lb bag
I'll be using them to make crispy nuts

I would say most health food stores and there are LOTS of places you can order online. If you buy in bulk....like spliting 25#'s between a few families you can buy LOTS at once. We buy 10-15#'s at a time and store them in the freezer.
one thing that reallyconfuses me is that in the nut recipes in NT some of them specify raw and others don't...what does that mean? Lie it says raw pumpkin seeds, but then just says pecans, doesn'tspecify raw or otherwise.....
oooh, this website is great for non-organic raw nuts! They have bulk disounts too... - http://www.ohnuts.com
