Well we have medical indication for repeated ultrasounds so I can't really answer. LOL We'd have the 20 week for sure regardless, so "Yes"??

We do have one u/s, but decline to be told the gender.

I have ultrasounds because I have known quite a few people whose baby's have benefited as they found kidney or heart problems in utero and were prepared at birth.

My DH's side also has had heart issues and a cousin died not long after birth because of a heart defect (pre-ultrasound days).

I know that the risks are low but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I went for our 20 week u/s last monday and the umbilical cord was in the way. I am not a fan of surprises because I like to be prepared and it is one more thing to share, but if they decide not to do another u/s oh well. We are half done and I don't know... If I don't know the sex I can still hold out hope for the first boy in our family in 42 years!!

I had one at 14 weeks because I was having severe cramping. (Everything was fine.) I think they're overused, but do have their purpose.

jlmack -- 42 years?!?! WOW.
Now I'll be very interested to find out what you're having!

I feel that it is somewhat irresponsible to not participate in the "big" ultrasound and make sure everything is develeoping properly, considering some problems can fixed in utero with fetal surgery.

This has nothing to dow with finding out the gender and I don't understand why some people are confusing it as such. We haven't found out with either pregnancies,

I allow one ultrasound per pregnancy (unless otherwise medically indicated). I get a level 2, where every possible measurement is checked and rechecked, and all the little bits and bobs are assessed. I feel more confident in my homebirthing decision if I know that there are no major medical issues found by u/s that might indicate the need for emergency care at birth. Certainly other issues might come up, and certainly other issues might get overlooked on the u/s. But having that one diagnostic done gives me peace in homebirthing.

I had a quick one to check my ovaries at 11.5 weeks because I was doubled over in pain for almost 48 hours - I could barely walk.
I didn't want one that soon... if at all. We have one scheduled for next Tuesday - but I'm considering cancelling it... I can't decide. I tried to talk to hubby about it yesterday... but he didn't really answer me.

Wasn't sure how to vote as I didn't really have the u/s just to see the baby
I chose to have them done for testing purposes (yeah, we did find out it was a boy this time, while they were checking the heart etc. -- we had the same tests done with DS but didn't want to know the sex.)

I think that's very judgmental.

I agree with this too, but I also agree with Yuma Doula that it is a bit judgemental.

I just came back from my Level II with a neonatologist. It was already planned but my blood screenings for downs syndrome came back with a 1 in 27 chance so I would have been scheduled anyway and am already scheduled for another one at 30 weeks. I'm 39.

I think it's a good idea to have the ultra sound to make sure all is well or to be prepared for what may need to happen after delivery. I really don't know if I would fix something in utero. I'm not having an amnio to check for downs syndrome for sure because we will deal with what is. Our main reasons (besides really wanting to know the sex) are to be prepared. There is no NICU in the hospital we are delivering. If necessary, our OB will arrange for us to deliver in a larger hospital with the proper care.

I seem to think more along the lines of people not wanting to disturb the fetus with the ultra sound than being concerned with the sex. I guess we all have our pre-concieved ideas about how others think.

An u/s showed us that baby #1 had hydronephrosis (water on the kidney) which was watched and corrected itself by 6 weeks old. Then, baby #2 **almost** had a heart defect that was double checked and found to be fine with u/s. So, yes, in my case it was the best decision for both pregnancies!

I had one last week. Wanted to check and make sure there were no health concerns. I'm delivering at a small hospital with a TINY NICU and we'd need to deliver somewhere else if there were health concerns!

I'm not making any promises either way right now. I don't want one. I wouldn't do fetal surgery, so that's a mute point for me. I think there is compelling evidence that they might not be completely safe, so that's a strike against geting one. But if I really felt intuitively I should get one, then I would. DH wants one - he wants to know boy or girl, but so far I've kept him at bay.

Rikki, if you hadn't known about those problems, what would have been the difference?

We're having one just in case, since we're planning homebirth too, but I'm not happy about it.
My biggest motivation (emotionally) is that if there's a congenital defect then I want a hospital birth, so it'll show up on their statistics and no one can blame home birth for the baby's death. grr

Like YumaDoula, I find that to be very judgmental.

I had 4 u/s with ds, none w/ dd, none w/ the miscarried baby, and none this time.

Somewhat irresponsible? How?

What happened back in the day before u/s? The baby was born, if there were probs they may or may not be fixed. You just deal.

I don't wanna stress out over a possible problem with my kid. I have enough stress AFTER they're born.

I do see your point (if it can be fixed, why not find out early?), but I don't think it's fair to just put a blanket statement out there that it's irresponsible. There are MANY choices I make in my life that others may deem somewhat irresponsible. An ultrasound is the least of my concerns.

PSA: I haven't had caffeine since Saturday and then today I had a caffeinated iced tea and have been jittery and anxious ever since. I may be a little too obnoxious in this post. I'm not sure and I can't tell. Sorry!

Jessitron- My daughter could have needed surgery for her hydronephrosis. We had to have her kidneys scanned and a check done for urethral reflux which could have led to kidney infection. Everything was fine and if we hadn't had the u/s we wouldn't have known so no harm no foul there I guess.

After we found out about her kidney isssue, my mom found out it is genetic in my family. My aunt had all 3 of her kids born with hydronephrosis one of her girls required follow-ups for 1 year before it resolved and her son had to have surgery to correct it. In males it is more dangerous and more often attributed to a blockage of sorts. So, the kidneys don't empty to the bladder efficiently and the urine is trapped in the kidney which can lead to kidney failure or sepsis due to ifnection.

So, it was a given we would have this child checked for hydronephrosis and even more important when we found out he was a he! The heart thing was not expected and luckily not a worry now. IF it would have been true that he only had 3 ventricles he would have quite possible died after birth with out treatment. If he did have the problem and we knew (due to u/s) then we could have the NICU attend the delivery and he would have been put on the proper meds to keep his dutus arteriosis and foramen ovale open until surgery. (I am a NICU nurse so, I kinda know the course!) I guess if we hadn't had it again we wouldn't have known and again no harm no foul. To me though, there is always the what if it went the other way and we didn't know.

Sorry so long!!!
