I know, is there such a thing as too much yarn?
Well, for some mamas there is no yarn.

You can donate some of your stash, including books, patterns, needles, etc. to mamas and kids in need through the holiday helper thread.
http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=550285

or, to go directly to the list of families in need, in case you don't have enough posts to get into TAO, go here:
http://www.spatulagirl.com/holidayhelper/ and click on "go help."

You can do a search for "yarn" or "knitting" to see those families could benefit from some of your stash.

And just think, if you give some away, that will make more room for you to be able to get more!

OK. I'd LOVE to do this. If I click on the first link, I can't seem to search the thread itself. Should I just email or post somewhere that I have yarn to share? Or should I sign up via the second link? Sorry I'm so : about this.

Thanks!
No problem, it can be confusing.
Click on the second link and, "go help" and do a search for "yarn" or "knitting". Then, if you see a family that needs those things, send a PM to Stacey0402 with the subject line "Family #__ - yarn", and let her know you have yarn or other items for that family. She'll send you their address and you mail off what you have!

You can also browse the families to see if you have other things that could help out.

I was just thinking about the Holiday Helpers! I have spent a long time on that site, reading each of the stories, and would encourage each of you to do so. In addition to any yarn, many of the families need diapering supplies and specifically need wool diaper covers or longies. If you have any extras or time to knit some, you can donate those as well.

I was thinking that all of us on here should organize ourselves for next year so that we can have a whole stash of hand knitted items ready to go to Families in Need. I have some ideas of how we might be able to go about organizing this if anyone is interested in making this a year long knit-along!

That's a great idea. I know some diaper makers got a head start over the summer.

I usually buy extra when I'm buying fabric or yarn, so maybe I can just keep a HH stash going throughout the year. Hopefully my knitting will speed up so I can knit for next year too.

That is a great idea! I'm another slow knitter, so having a long-term goal would be great!!!!

I was kind of thinking that we could come up with a 'universal package' for diapering. Something like 6 wraps, 3 soakers, 2 pairs of longies -- since I have no practical experience with diapering, I thought some of the mamas on here might have an idea what would be the most useful combination. Then we could pick a yarn, I'm thinking Knitpicks Wool of the Andes since it is only $2/skein.

If we seriously wanted to do this, it would be good to have one person keep track of what everyone is knitting to make sure we have a good variety of sizes and complete sets. I would be happy to do that.

Anyway, these are just a couple of random of thoughts. I'd love to hear what everyone else thinks.

Love the idea!

I'd also love it if this could possibly be expanded to include other knitted items. I've never done a soaker, and although I'd like to try, it'd also be nice to know I could contribute a plain and simple hat, mittens, etc. Maybe that would take two point people -- one for the diaper-related items and one for the outdoor-related items. Just thinking "out loud," so to speak...

I like that idea! (I've actually never done a soaker either. I have done wraps, which are super-easy).

I forgot to mention the other thing I was thinking about this -- we could put links in the first post to free patterns that we would use for this project.

i'd love to join in -- Karen if you want someone to keep track of diaper related items i can do that while you do hats/mittens/etc? or vice verse?
should we keep this on the forum or maybe do a yahoo group?

I have volunteered as a helper and picked a family that "prefers wool" and is in search of hats/mittens/scarves so I can knit for them. I would think that if you are interested for this year you could just pick a family that could use some things rather than try to do something across the board...are you thinking of doing that for next year? or were you thinking for this year?

I was thinking for next year.

I am knitting some wraps for a family this year, and am going to try to do them for a second family if I have time. I just started thinking about how many more families I could have helped if I had been knitting all year long in preparation!

My thought was to keep it in the Yarn Crafts Board, and start a new thread called MIN Year long Knit along or something like that. We could start this thread in late December or early January, after this year's Holiday Helper season is completed. I figured we would pm some of the organizers, explain what we were thinking and how we were planning to do it, and ask for their input on the best way to integrate this into the overall plan for next year.

(BTW, I am thinking we could do something similar with playsilks. Many of the families mention this on the list of toys for their children. Again, this is an easy one to come up with a set -- I was thinking Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple. Next time there is a Dharma Co-op we could get the silks and/or dyes and start getting sets together).

I think that's a great idea. I'm knitting for a family, and am really, really struggling not to overcommit myself and end up letting people down: I'm conscious of the fact that I've only got a month until the last postage date for Xmas, and I have two things that need finishing and sending state-side. Being able to get started earlier, and knowing that we can find a bum for my knitting to go on, would be brilliant.

Yeah, the time commitment right now is my big worry. I have a lot of Christmas knitting I am planning for my family, and am nervous that I won't get to finish it all in time.

Hi guys! I think this is a great idea!

We get a lot of requests for longies, soakers, hats, mittens and wool socks. The last three for baby to adult sizes.

It isn't realistic to organize this right now but I think it could be a lot of fun for after Christmas. Maybe focuz on one items a month. Like everyone knits socks on Januarya, soakers in February, etc. Just an idea

I asked Karen to keep me updated on this, I would love to join it myself. I never have much time around this time of year
