Hi mamas. I've been interested in learning some form of meditation for the past couple of years, and for some reason I just haven't taken the plunge to actually *do* it. It's almost like I'm resistant to it, or afraid, but I have no idea of what or why. I do know that I'm pretty bad at clearing my mind and not getting distracted (like when I'm lying down to go to sleep), so maybe I just am not sure if I can really do this.

Anyway, I was wondering if any of you practice, and if so, how did you get started, and how does it affect your life now?

I have plenty of time these days, and I figure now's as good a time as any, and it will probably be beneficial to both me and the babe.

Yes definitely. Haven't much lately with the morning sickness... I don't know why. I don't really know how long I've been doing it. I guess that depends on your definition of meditation. I think sitting quietly and reflecting can be considered just as much a meditation as doing a guided tape/CD or the traditional sort of yoga pose sitting meditation where you concentrate on one word or phrase (mantra) or a crystal or symbol such as a mandala.
Spirituality has always been my forte so I can't say that I ever decided to really "get into" it. I do understand the whole fear thing. I was raised very conservative and taught not to trust my intuition or do things like meditate because my parents thought those were (among many) ways to conjure up evil spirits
I happen to think that nothing could be further from the truth. Your spirit guides and guardian angels work in the frequency of love and light and nothing they reveal to you could ever hurt you or do you anything but work for your highest good and the good of all concerned. Anyway, fear sort of clogs up your metaphysical senses and can take some working at. Another thing that seems to deter people from starting is that they make it out to be something that it's not. You just have to do it to understand.

As far as the clearing your mind thing the best advice I can give that worked for me is to just repeat one word or phrase over and over. It helps to close your eyes. If you think of anything else, just pretend that you are a distant observer of that thought and keep repeating your word or phrase until the thought passes. As you begin to meditate sometimes it may take a while until you can reach a state of meditation where random thoughts don't intrude. But until then just keep at it.

For me, I always ask my angels for protection, guidance, or whatever comes to mind before I meditate. After I am done I always feel more grounded and centered and much more relaxed. I am very intuitive and empathic and meditation seems to hone in on those skills as well. I usually come away feeling a bit wiser and more able to handle all the "junk" going on in life.

Hope this helps. You can find tons of info and even find your own meditation style online. Just use Google or another search engine. Enjoy.

I have a hard time meditating too. I think it is because I feel silly. Recently I bought a hypnobabies CD for pregnancy and I have been listening to that at night and concentrating on the affirmations. It says stuff like "you are going to have a healthy pregnancy". So far I like it and I am hoping that if I hear it enough I will start to feel more confident about my upcoming VBAC and not so scared.
