Do you need CLO if you eat a lot of liver--and how much?

How much liver would one have to eat in order to not buy CLO.
A friend and I were talking about this. Local pastured beef liver is easily, available and fermented CLO is so dang expensive. How much liver? Daily? Every other day? A few times a week? I remember in NT or EFLF them mentioning if you don't eat liver several times a week then you should take CLO. Has anyone here done any or read any research about it?

in my opinion CLO is a supplement for people who have trouble getting enough vitamin A and D and a few other things...

it's a suppement. and it's ideal ot get ot from food. if you are getting enough nutrition from food then no, you for sure don't need any supplementing! (and awesome for you for realizing that! lol I take CLO b/c I do have trouble gettiing enough... and i always think it's funny how people don't even question if they should be taking CLO or not lol)
p.s. "how much is enough?"

well it totally depends. you could look up daily needs for the average adult and child... but you are likely getting some of it if you eat dark leafy greens and meat now. you can also be tested if you want more accuracy and see if you're low or above etc... and then work around that.

some people can just tell by how they feel (like myself). I feel tired, listless, worried and depressed when I'm imbalanced in those two vitamins in particular.. so I go by that for myself mostly.
A lot of people consider CLO a food, not a supp.

I've been eating liver daily - about 1/4 of a cup/day. I've also been wondering if I need CLO on top of it, but maybe for the omega 3s & DHA? It's not only the A&D that are mood boosting, yk?

As far as the fermented CLO, the latest Wise Traditions says that it contains a lot more D than HVCLO & also more K2 - which we need in order to avoid D toxicity (or A?)

The fermented is more expensive, but the dosage is lower, so it will last longer.

interesting...

I wouldn't agree personally. but I guess I could see it. if it were harvested in a fresher way I'd be more prone to thinking of it as food I guess. and if it were sold with other oils (like olive and coconut) maybe that would make a difference in my thoughts. but i definantly don't "eat" my CLO...I force it down and wash it down with something good to drink. heh.

anyhow yeah... I don't get it. but I see how it could be thought of that way...sorta.

So, I laughed out loud at this, and I just wanted to say I'm SO glad to have found groups like this where talking about the *fun* of eating (or gagging down, in some of our cases) CLO and liver is a totally normal and expected thing to discuss. (I can imagine the reaction of some of the folks I know irl were I to mention liver or CLO!)

Just excited to get my giggles from this group!!

Thanks for the thoughts. My computer has been down, and I just got back on.

I am still confused, but a little more informed. Agh, I can't focus on writing anymore time to start nap time.

that's why ground liver recipes mixed with ground beef are a fabulous idea!

I think for all the nutrients, you need to sit down and think about how much you want to consume. WAPF guidelines assume people eat liver maybe once a week, and have other lesser sources of A, but as a baseline, they're saying adults (non-pregnant, non-deficient) should get 10,000 IU of A per day from CLO.

http://westonaprice.org/basicnutriti...-oil-menu.html

I like nutritiondata.com for info on nutrients, so here's their page on beef liver...

http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/beef-products/3470/2

They say there are about 7500 IU of vitamin A per 1 ounce (cooked) of beef liver, so maybe 10 ounces cooked per week, to roughly include the vitA from CLO and a reasonable amount from other sources?

From there, I'd say you need to decide if you think the WAPF guidelines are reasonable (too high, too low, are you trying to correct long-standing deficiencies, like that), think of other sources of vitamin D, since CLO has some and liver doesn't have appreciable amounts (any? not sure). The one downside of nutritiondata.com is they are often, often missing vitamin D info for their foods. Real bummer.

That's how I approach this stuff anyway.
