We usually do it on the deck behind our house.

Why would you do that? That's like... peeling your oranges in the produce aisle.

Or am I just missing something because I'm too New York?:

I've seen people do it here, and I'm in NY too- then again, Long Island isn't NYC, it's a whole different culture.

I don't shuck my corn at the store because I like putting it on the BBQ intact! Why rip off the natural covering just to put it in aluminum foil?

I've never been able to understand shucking at the store - makes no sense to me! Actually, I get a little impatient when trying to get to the corn to pick out a few nice ears for my family and I have to reach around the shuckers who are taking up all the space and making a mess. I just don't get it. One farmer's market I go to has a sign that forbids shucking - you are allowed to peel a bit back to check for quality, but no complete shucking is allowed. I love that!

I think that people want to make sure the corn inside is "good". I never do it. It just seems weird to me.

Are people alllowed to do that?!! I would give someone a dirty look if I saw them completely shucking the corn right there at the produce aisle. Sometimes I pull back one leaf, revealing the corn, just to make sure it's not infested with worms, but I feel guilty even just doing that.

I sometimes shuck the corn, depending on time, kids' temperament, etc.

The grocery stores here have big bins beside the corn for people to shuck, and it then gets composted.

I pull a bit of the peel back to check to make sure it's not all bug eaten, but I don't fully shuck it! I do that over my garbage can at home.

This has never made any sense to me! I mean, I guess I get that it keeps the mess out of your house, but what a mess it makes at the store! I open the first inch or so to check for rot, but never shuck! And if you shuck at the store, doesn't the corn dry out if you don't eat it that day?

And yeah, I'd be curious to see if it's a regional thing. I'm in suburban MA.

I voted other. Most of the time I only peel back a little to check and leave it intact. There is one store here that practically encourages shucking though. They have bins and several "stations" so that many people can shuck their corn at once. There I do it. As others have stated though if I am grilling I leave it intact anyway. hehe

Wow, I'm really surprised by all of the nos! It seems like almost everyone around here does it and all of the stores provide bins.

I'm in Mass, too.

Our Market Basket has a barrel where people toss their husks. It seems like a pain to shuck at the store...I'd rather do it at home!

I do it when they provide the bins, i really hate the mess in my house. Though my ds1 really likes to help. I do grow my own so when i'm ready to harvest i let him have at it.
