nak

pardon my ignorance, but i just don't know. dd is 11 wks, and gaining on the slow side (4 oz/week usually). meets and exceeds the wet diaper and dirty diaper normals, alert and meeting milestones, etc,

does a lot of short nursing episodes, falls asleep, wakes up hungry, nurses, falls asleep, etc....like nurses 10min., sleeps 10min...really ALL day long.

for some oddreason, she doesn't nurse well on my right side, like she slides off unless i hold my breast for her. sometimes she pulls herself off and on, until i switch sides. also, the past 2 days she doesn't seem to be sucking as vigorously.

she was a sleepy baby in thoses early weeks (percocet), and i had trouble getting her to nurse more. i fear that i hurt my supply in that time...

we also had thrush issues, which cleared and I still "keep after it" with acidophilus and GSE and no refined sugar.

she also has pretty bad reflux, which improved a lot after i eliminated dairy.

sorry for so much info., just wanted to put out the complete picture.

I doubt you have supply problems. I don't know what it is, but she sounds just like Evan, right down to the reflux! He's always been a slow gainer, but got his min 4ozs and that's all he needed. :LOL I always say it's an indication of how school will go, just enough to slide by! I think part of Evan's problems sometimes is he too isn't a long nurser, but he loves to nurse many times a day (I'd say at least 18x a day). If her diapers look good and she's active for her age (she should be about hitting a growth spurt which can make them sleepy and want to nurse a lot) and hitting milestones, I wouldn't worry. Some babies are just funny nursers.

4 oz per week is still in the acceptable range and if you are getting enough wet/poopy diapers, that is a good sign.
Make sure all sucking is at the breast (no pacifiers, bottles). Try breast compressions while you nurse if you are wanting to up supply a bit, but like pp, it sounds like you are doing just fine!

sounds about normal to me! especially if she's wetting lots of diapers, that's a sure sign that she's getting enough milk.

as for the one side that she seems to be kind of "finicky" on, have you tried changing positions? i remember with my son, on my left breast he seemed to prefer the football position but on the right it had to be cross-cradle. sometimes it can be because the nipple is slightly different, for ex, in my case my right nipple was flat and my left just slightly inverted. other differences are more subtle, but it's worth playing around to see if it makes a difference.

good luck
