Four months is an out of date recommendation. Recent research says that waiting at least 6 months is better for starting solids.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has been recommending waiting to start solids until 6 months for six years...since 1997. The World Health Organization has been recommending waiting 6 months for several more years.

What will happen if you start earlier? Maybe nothing, but research shows that starting solids earlier than 6 months can increase the risk of food allergies (which can manifest as ear infections, rashes, intestinal upset...) and adult obesity.
Giving anything but human milk before 4 months also increases the risk of asthma to the child.
