I've been on the fence about getting a high chair for my 8 month old ds. He has been held most of his life and is now starting to eat a bit from the table. It's a bit crazy holding him on my lap, but he likes it. I've held off on getting a high chair because I'm not comfortable with the idea of strapping a baby in to a big plastic apparatus, but it would give me a better opportunity to prepare food and eat it myself. Ds is way to grabby to wear him while I'm doing this, except for back carry, which I do sometimes, but often am just too tired! (he is heavy!)
Wondering what others babywearers do for mom's and baby meals....

We have a wooden one that looks like a regular chair. It pulls right up to the table, instead of sitting separately with that big plastic tray. Depending on how much you want to spend, Stokke makes great ones and so does IKEA.
That said, DD does often prefer a lap to a highchair.
we got one for around $25 that straps to one of your chairs and can be pulled right up to the table so ds can eat with us! Then at least I can eat my dinner while helping him eat. Afterwards the chair just goes right up against the table to be put away and it's hidden.
I used high chairs with both of mine, but they were never strapped in or forced to stay there. Thinking about it though, I don't think we started with the high chair untill they were like 11 months or so, but then niether of my kids were eating much untill then, so there seemed to be no point in a high chair
When we did start with the high chair they would usually start out in the high chair and then about half way through the meal end up on either my lap or Dh's
For meal prep I usually wear Ds. If I was using the stove or chopping food, I would wear him on my back. Otherwise he prefers to be in front.
