Our cat & dog are vaccinated, mostly I keep that up to date because they both go to the kennel occasionally & it is required.
I also use the heartworm yearly jab for our dog, as sometimes I would forget to give her the tablet & then I would stress for ages that my dog had contracted heartworm from a mosquito bite.... better all around to have a yearly injection I reckon, in our situation anyway.
My cats are vax free and my dog was up to date for puppy classes. She had a vax reaction, but trust me, the dog needed those classes. I would only ever get her the rabies shot again b/c I don't want her automatically put down for not having it if she's a good dog and bites an intruder.
I have 2 Standard Poodles, a breed known for autoimmune disease.
Luckily, my boy's breeder (exceedingly ethical breeder- no BYBs or puppy mills for us!) is also a fan of limited vaccinations, so he only got distemper/parvo at 7 weeks (most puppies get a buttload of vaccs before they leave their breeder @ 8 weeks.) He then got distemper/parvo @ 16 weeks, and that was it. He had rabies, parvo/distemper @ 12 months (which is against the law, but, whatever.) and his rabies booster that'll last 3 years at 2 years. (This is only a little more cautious than Jean Dodd's vaccine protocol. She's a great champion!)
We got my girl when she was 5 months old, so she already had the full 5-in-1 puppy series. : (
Our cat is indoor-only and has not had any vaccinations since his shelter ones.
I actually started learning about vaccines and reactions,e tc, when I was obsessively preparing for a puppy. (I'm serious, I was so obsessive! BUT- my boy, Happy, is pretty much the best dog ever, in terms of temperament, breeding, genetic health, and "environmental" health, and being a snugglebear.) I realized that researchers like Dr. Jean Dodds are making some really upsetting findings regarding the total lack of safety in pet vaccinations more widely known, and has developed a great vaccine protocol.
Vaccines are openly known to cause cancer in dogs and cats (at the injection site) to the extent that there's a pamphlet at our vets' about "Vaccines, Cats, and Cancer."
Interesting personal story about vax, had a litter some time back had just got third and final installment of 5way including parvo. They caught parvo, one died, one survived, other pup never caught it. Found that to be an interesting testament to efficacy.
We use a cattle vax to deworm simply cause its cheap and we have lost dogs to hookworms, but don't plan on vaxing for anything else again.
I protect our pets by NOT vaxxing, but with our dog the vet spayed her and vaxxed her without asking, because they "assumed" we wanted it done. Now for the first time in my life I have a dog with tumors. No other animal has died from disease, although I remember about 50 years ago as a kid that I did see a farm cat die of something other than old age.
By the way, PARVO was a contaminant in an earlier animal vaccine. Unfortunately, the scientific monograph I read did not mention which one, but it erupted simultaneously all over the world which is not the way epidemics work, so one could probably research back to that date and see what was introduced or changed in the way of other dog vaccines.
