Slides and slide photography with a digital camera? Saleable fine art prints? Does anyone have much experience with producing these?

We learned to take slides with 35mm but I use digital and I am doing them outdoors where the light is free... I have had slides shipped from a digital processor. They were pretty good, but not as good as I would like. Photos seem to work out better as documentation so far... Why is this? Will a good indoor light setup help quality at all, or is sunlight pretty much ideal?

I am planning to get a higher-resolution camera. Anyone familiar with what qualities make for a good digital camera for taking photos for slides?

I didn't do an intro here but I am currently working in pastels-- sometimes fairly large. (I am worried about their surface being affected if I have them scanned for prints.)

Since you are working with a digital camera, you could try do mutliple test slides to see which has better lighting. My stuff has to be under some sort of tent because it is so highly reflective, so I find setting up lights indoors is easier. I read an article in Craft Report and someone else recommended that when I do my booth shots, to do them when it is slightly overcast outside because direct sun light can cause glare.

I use a 6 mega pixel camera to do my slides because many of the shows I apply to require that the digital slides be 1920 x 1920 pixels. I went to my local camera shop, and borrowed a few cameras to see which best fit our camera needs before purchasing one. I actually gave the camera as a gift to dh for his birthday because he has done quite a bit of photography in the past, so it also has many features for him.

The whole slides thing is elitist BS and pisses me off to no end. Yes, there was a time when this represented the truest color and best way to be able to show your work to a large jury etc... but with the technology today- there is no reason why a CD of work should not be able to document your work... no reason at all unless they want to purposly exclude people who can not afford tons of expensive processing that will never serve any purpose other than jumping through their hoop.

It's like those jerks who insist you have to fax something- even if it's just a number they could jot down with a pen when you say it over the phone.
