Well, I emailed them and they sent a cryptic response about organic being a word that has been co-opted by corporations like Walmart, which I agree with, but didn't clearly specify how their own policies differ. He did say that the cows are pastured in season, fed their own hay during the winter, and supplemented with grain when necessary.
We go to a local dairy (they don't do raw milk, sadly) nearby, but they don't list "organic." It's my understanding that for a farm to use the word "organic" is an expensive certification process that is often cost-prohibitive for small dairies, and we had to weigh how we felt environmentally about the fossil fuels, etc. used to get our Stonyfield organic milk to us from far away on truck OR get local milk from cows 3 miles away who are grass fed, supplemented with grain in winter, antibiotics are not an issue because if a cow does get something if sick, they can't use the milk and have to test to it's clear until the cow's milk can be re-added to the supply (makes sense if a consumer has a penicillin allergy). We opted for local and feel good with our choice. Of course, we are willing to travel farther for raw milk.

I agree. The certification isn't an issue for me. They've only been selling raw milk since November, but still I'm surprise that not one person on MDC has checked them out.
Bumping, for any interested parties. I've been drinking their milk for a couple of weeks now. The cows are definitely on pasture, it's easy to tell from the color of the cream. Quite yummy and reasonably priced at 3.50 for a 1/2 gallon.
I've been thinking of getting some milk from them - anyone else try them recently? I was there last Sunday and they were out of milk. The place looked a bit rundown so I was a little concerned. I know small family farming is tough though so if others on this forum are comfortable with them, that works for me! <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile"> Did anyone check out the cows to see if they look happy and healthy?
I've bought it, and it was tasty, but lately they have not had any. I see the cows out on pasture all the time, however.<br><br>
I wish we knew how much grain they were getting, and what kind. There hasn't been anyone around when I have checked.<br><br>
I love the Foxboro milk, but don't enjoy driving to Foxboro.<br><br>
The run down-ness is only because they are a family trying to make it farming. They are really nice folks-- I remember when the McMansions behind their farm were going up. They were forced to stop raising pigs, so they had to change their entire focus, and that cost them big time. People move to the country, but then they demand the famers knock off their livlihood. It was very sad. I try to support them when I can as they seem like dedicated folks.<br><br>
btw, I sell pasture and free range eggs, that I supplement with organic feed (that I order), so PM me if you're interested in that. Currently, they are feasting on my organic purslane-- high in all kinds of wonderfull-ness.
They are selling again. I asked her about the grass, and she said they try to keep them on grass as much as possible, and they were eating hay and grass when I stopped by. Everyone looked happy. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile"> She also added that the hay they get is untreated. They do give grain in winter, but that's pretty standard, not much way around that in the snow. I am still not sure if they get much grain otherwise. I need to chat again with her.<br><br>
That said, I just made butter with some of the milk; the cream rose beautifully to the top and I scooped it off. It is unbelievably tasy and rich. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/img/vbsmilies/smilies/eat.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Eat">:
I've been getting milk from there regularly lately. It is always good! So far, it has been there each time I've gone - about 2 - 3 times per week.<br><br>
I figured that was why the farm looked a little rough...totally understandable these days. Seems very unfair!!
