We just came back from a 'meet and greet' appointment with a holistic dentist...he was a strong advocate for something called zylitol in lieu of flouride. I'd never heard of it before, but in doing a little reading about it online, it almost seems to good to be true. It is billed as being a natural sweetener (naturally occurring in certain berries, for example) that can drastically reduce tooth decay. For instance, something I read said that if you chewed gum with zylitol twice a day for one month you would be getting 6 months of cavity prevention! Seriously?? So, should I really give my kids daily bits of candy/gum sweetened with zylitol in the name of cavity prevention?
