My daughter just turned seven, and she's been knitting since late last fall. Several of her friends, all ages 6-7 know how to knit. Your 7 yr old should be fine learning how to knit, if interested.
My DD learned to knit at 7 in 1st grade at school. The first thing the class knitted was a purse. So I would say definitely she is old enough. I don't remember how old I was when my grandmother taught me to knit, probably around six or seven. I loved knitting and was very prolific!
I learned to knit at 8 and to crotchet at 7. A general rule of thumb is that they can learn to knit when they can hold a pencil properly. I think 7 is old enough and 6 is not out of the question.
DD isn't old enough yet, but I plan on starting her at 7 or 8, which is about when I started. And I taught myself with a book using just the pictures.
I taught my 5 y.o. DS to crochet granny squares, so if your 7 y.o. is interested I don't see why not. I think Magic Cabin (and probably a lot of other places too) has pretty neat learn to knit project kits that come with instructions, yarn and needles.
My dd loves any yarn crafts! I showed her how to finger knit at 5 and she did it constantly for months! She just turned 7 and has basic crochet and knitting skills as well as a 'nifty knitter' that she really enjoys. I showed several kids (and some adults) how to finger knit and they loved it. I just wish I could knit better.
