You can try doulamatch.net and see if some of the doulas in your area offer this, many doulas do this for non clients!

You're definitely NOT the only one who had a weird feeling! Since I'm working full time right now and not able to continue with my apprenticeship in midwifery, I wanted to offer some services that would not be as time-dependent. I had a "phone interview" with Jodi and I felt as if I were talking to one of those people who sell stuff on latenight TV and convince you that the bullet or the rotisserie is the BEST thing EVER and if you don't have one, you just aren't in the know, and why WOULDN'T you want to do it OUR way, just like every one else??? Very shifty, very high-pressure sales type talk, very very evasive about the costs and the quotas. I didn't understand it the first or second time she "explained" it but as she talked more and I asked more questions she got more hostile and eventually was outright exasperated-sounding. I didn't want to commit to holding classes or events or going to my local library or a local health fair and having a booth. I simply wanted to know how to encapsulate properly and safely and be able to offer that service to my midwifery friend's clients. A lot of midwives I know simply don't have time to offer this service.
Anyway, I said forgettabout it and now, my midwife for this baby is suggesting that raw may be better anyway, that nutrients are lost in the drying and or steaming process.
Thoughts on that? Dry vs. steamed then dried, vs. raw??

I do not know of any other sites that certify, but you can get OSHA certified for blood born pathogens specific to doula work and placenta encapsulation.

I'm a professional and I am self taught, but I did look into the training at first. It felt like she was running in circles and there was a lot of "sketchy" things with her. I didn't like the feel of things so I decided to not do her training. I am glad I didn't.

I have been thinking about this lately as well. I couldn't afford the PBI if I had wanted to! I do plan to go the independent route. I tried subscribing to the ning group but just kept going in circles; password issues mostly. Can someone familiar with ning let me know what to do?

I also offer this service, independently in Toronto. I use the raw dehydration method, and super charge with Reiki.

Wow. I actually went ahead and joined mothering here just so I could reply to this post.

THANK YOU!!! I have been wanting to learn to encapsulate placenta for the past few months now and talked to my husband last night about when I would start the PBi training. I was planning on starting it next month, but after reading all this, I won't!!! I'm sure I would've said NO WAY once I called for the 'interview' and she was talking about money and quotas, but this saves me a bunch of money on the training. Now I just have to figure out how to learn this without their training and without having hands-on practice. :( I just gave birth at home 4 months ago, but I wasn't 'aware' enough of what was going on afterwards to make sure they kept my placenta. It wasn't until 2 days later when I remembered to ask my husband where the placenta was and he said "The midwives took it". Ugh. SO sad!

But, yes, I will keep following this thread and for those who did start without formal training through PBi, where/how did you learn? Thanks!

Since my post almost 2 months ago, I now have all my equipment here and will be encapsulating my first placenta in the next week or two!!! PLEASE, if you are truly interested, go join http://thenewplacentagroup.ning.com/ and read around, ask questions, and do your research! I'm 'training myself', though there is SO much great info on the forum there, I certainly cannot attribute it all to myself. :)

I learned through reading about the placenta and enacpsulation and then encapsulated my own. You can also ask mommas if any are willing to donate their placenta to you if they aren't wanting to encapsulate, or have a placenta that has been in the freezer for too long.

I also second the The New Placenta Group. It is a wonderful resource and the women on there are great.
