He has been acting a-ok (slleping a bit more than usual yesterday, but that's it) but feeling a little warm... I'vre taken his temp twice today - 99.7 at 9:00 and 99.3 at 11:00. Both of these were rectal temps -- armpit readings are in the low 98's. I know that rectal temps are higher, and The Baby Book says not to get concerned over temps under 100. He's my first, though, and I can't help but worry! Any advice? :

I'm sorry I don't know the answer, but wanted to send you hugs cause I know how scary it is with your babes when they are sick!!

Any other signs of illness? If you undress him a little in to lighter clothing, check his temp after a little while does it come down a bit? Perhaps he's over heated?

Wish I could help more!! I think technically 99 is a fever though, and any fever in a babe that young should be checked out immediately...

Well, based on a bunch of googling that I just did, a newborn is considered to have a fever with a rectal temperature over 100.2.

You might want to google it a bit yourself, just for reassurance. I know how much we mamas worry about our new babies - especially our first!

There is nothing in your post that make me think he's got a fever. 98.6 is average that would be 99.6 rectal.

Please check out the vaccine forum before injecting him with ANYTHING.

With temps of 99.7 and 99.3 I would not panic. If you check it and it's over 100.4 rectally then that would be worrisome. When my little one was battling a chest cold recently his temp was 99.4 and he was fine. And I wouldn't give him anything for a temp especially cause he's so young.
