Since babies teethe off and on until around the age of two (or later?), does the amount of teething drool continue pretty consistently during that time? I'm just curious because I thought my DD's drooling would decrease some after her first two teeth broke through, but the drooling is just as heavy now and maybe heavier. It's not out of control, I'm just wondering if we'll slow the rate of bibs we go through everyday.

I don't know, I really think drooling doesn't always have anything to do with teething. DD drooled the most months before she had any drool. Now she has two in and two coming in at once and just drools a little. But I nannyed a baby who went through several bibs per day- soaking them- regardless of teeth/no teeth.

The profuse saliva of a teething baby can cause irritation in the intestines interfering with proper absorption. When babies teethe, we can see lots of drooling. Large quantities of saliva is swallowed which can irritate the intestines causing runny, acidic stools. This can also cause a rash in the diaper area.

My DS drooled really heavily, and had a constant rash on his chest as a result, between the ages of about 4 months and 8 months (I think). It was to the point that I actually kept a pre-fold diaper tucked into his shirt under his chin, and it would just get soaked! He got his first four teeth between 7 and 8 months. He now has 16 teeth, and I think he is getting his last four now - the two-year molars. None of his later teeth were accompanied by the super-heavy drooling. I don't know if he just got better at swallowing as he got older, but whatever the reason, we were able to retire the bibs after about 8 months, and the rash never came back.
