I can't really figure out the hip carry with a MT either.
And that does NOT look comfortable, not for a long journey.
Will you have your partner or other family with you on this trip? If so, back carries are easy, b/c you can have them put your child on your back and then tie her on. That's the ONLY way I can get DS into a back carry.
If you won't have anyone available to help her on to your back, gosh, I might actually buy a child backpack, one with straps and such (like the Kelty Kids style?) that makes a back carry not as difficult with putting her on your back then tying straps and such.
She just looks pretty big for that hip carry, and I think you'll be limping pretty quickly....
