One of my friends has a one month old and she (yay!!) asked me for some vax info b/c she in considering not vaxing her son. I kept it brief, but sent am going to send her this email. I want to make sure it's all accurate...what do you think??

"I wanted to send you some info on the 2 month well baby shots. I'll keep it as condensed as possible....so....the shots that are reccommended for the 2 month visit are DTaP (Diptheria, Tetanus, and acellular Pertussis), Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type bV), IPV (Inactivated Polio), and Rotavirus. I'll give you a bit of info on each one, and if you want more, just let me know.

DTaP - So, of the three diseases that this is supposed to protect against, only one of the Pertussis, is your DS remotely likely to catch. Tetanus is very rare. Of all the million..billions...of people in the US, there were only 150 cases in 2005, very few of them in children. I tell you this, because your pediatrician will probably give you all kinds of scary stories about what could happen if DS gets tetanus. The deal also is that tetanus needs an anaerobic environment to live...i.e. no oxygen. If you get a cut and it bleeds, your chances of getting tetanus are nil. Also, there is an "after the fact" shot you can get if you do get, say, a puncture wound that doesn't bleed. Of all the diesases that are "vaccine preventable" tetanus is the least of your worries.
As far as the pertussis component...so, pertussis is only really something to worry about in babies under 6 months. After that, the body has the immune strength to fight it off. As a matter of fact, you have probably had it as an adule and not even known about it. It just seems like a long lasting cough in adults. The thing is, a baby is supposed to get 4 DTaP shots to confer immunity, and he wont get that 4th shot till he's 8 months old anyways...by that point, pertussis isnt even an issue. The doctor will probably tell you that pertussis is on the rise, and that's true, but the chance of Kanoa catching it (especially since he's breastfed and not in daycare and because we live in a tropical climate) are extremely slim.
Diptheria is basically eradicated, there hasnt been a case in ages. Another thing to consider, even if the diseases were something to worry about, is the ingredients in the DTaP vaccine. It contains formaldehyde, aluminum phosphate, ammonium sulfate, and thimerosal (mercury) and washed sheep red blood cells....not exactly the things i want injected into my DS and im sure you dont want them in your DS. I can tell you more info if you want it, but I think you get the idea.

Now, as far as Hib. This vaccine is supposed to prevent bacterial menengitis. Unfortunately, it only (supposedly) protects against one strain of the bacteria. I say supposedly because the few cases that do pop up are often in vaccinated kids. There are several bacterias that can confer menengitis and there is no vaccine that protects against all the different strains of bacteria. Hib is a relatively new vacine, nobody in our generation received it. It's ingredients include ammonium sulfate, thimerosal, and chemically defined yeast-based medium. All of these additives are shown to be unsafe in any amount, and the FDA still permits vaccines to contain them. My pediatrician told me that she hasnt seen a case of bacterial menengitis in over 18 years.

For IPV (the polio vaccine), I really cant see any point in doing it. Polio has been eradicated for ages, and the vaccine has so many stories of bad side effects. It contains formaldehyde, and 2-phenoxyethenol and has continuous line of monkey kidney cells that act as binders to allow the vaccine to attach to human DNA...gross. It kinda freaks me out to think of all that stuff swimming around in so many little babies. No wonder things like chldhood lukemia, type 1 diabetes, autism, ADD, ect. are on the rise so much.

Rotavirus is basically a diahrrea vaccine...ok, not really...but, kinda. Rotavirus symptoms include diahrrea, vomiting, cramping dehydration...annoying and uncomfortable, but far from deadly. It is uncommon in babies who are exclusively breast fed and who arent in a daycare setting. It is more common in undeveloped countries, but does pop up in the US. It's ingredients contain potassium monophosphate, potassium diphosphate, sucrose, and monosodium glutamate (MSG). It also contains rhesus monkey fetal diploid cells, and bovine (pig) fetal serum. It also contains the antibiotics neomycin sulfate, and amphotericin B. A troublesome thing about this vax is that it sheds.

sounds great, but you might want to include something on Prevnar because they will most likely try to give that one too.
