Dd is hitting faces. It is totally loving, but it hurts and she has a lot of baby friends. I worry she will hit them. She seems like she is doing it out of excitement, to tell the truth. We have beent aking her hand and showing her better ways to touch faces and saying "gentle" over and over. Canyone else going thru this? Any positive ideas on how to stop her from doing this?

I also have a secret fear that her great grandma will be holding her and she will do it and gg will do or say something innappropriate. SO I am owrking on her, but I still need to work on dd.
TIA

My dd did this, she is now 11 months old, but it started back when she was 8/9 months old. All I did was gently hold her arm, say gentle, be gentle or hurt mommy...something like that. She would also do this with the pets and so I would hold her arm/hand gently and help her to gently pet the animal...all the while saying gentle and things like, oh look how much buddy (our dog) likes when you're gentle. She's just now getting a little more gentle, but every now and then I get a whallop or a hair yank. But I agree prepare grandma and let her know they are "love taps," given with the best of love.

My dd does this too and she has been for a while! she will be 10 mo tomorrow...I do the same thiing-tell her gentle and remover her hand..she grabs on really hard and will pinch whatever part of the face she can grab!

I guess it is just a way for her to explore-she doesn't understand that it hurts!

My ds started this around the same time; I'd take his hand and make a gentle "petting" motion with it on my face (or whatever body part he wanted to hit) and I'd say "gentle" or "nice". We did the same thing when he wanted to pat/hit the dog or cat.

He's 15months now and starting to get it, lol!

My DD is doing this with the pets and babies. She is facinated by both!
(She also does this with adult faces, but we have a game we play with our face- honk honk with the nose, bzzz bzz with the forehead (third eye) and ding ding ding with the chin, but that is another story.

Anyway, we say nice, nice, and show her how to pet, touch, ect. She has actually already improved. I think modeling really helps. When she hurts the pet/person we always say ouch. One of these days i hope that one sinks in.

Hey Lauren,

Celestia also was doing that same sort of thing. Only she would make the motion like she wanted to bite, when she didn't even have a tooth! She is getting better at it now, only really picking on the younger babies. She does not want to share anything, and every one else's toy is always the one she wants. I've just had to learn that it's a part of growing up. She is starting to respond to "gentle," which is a good thing! It started about he same age as Sephie. It'll pass!!
