She'll rub her forehead back and forth on our chests when we're holding her, like she's trying to burrow in. Is this normal, and WHY does she do it? It is some weird form of rooting? Or what?

My DS does it, too, but really only when he's super tired. He'll basically just move his head back and forth...back and forth...sort of a Stevie Wonder kind of motion! He's actually rubbed a bald spot on the back of his head from doing it in bed!!! <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol">

Both of my nieces used to do this, from when they were teensy until they got to be much older. When my older niece was about 14 months old, I asked her what she was doing and she said, "I want to get under your skin." <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/love.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="love"> I think it's just a snuggling thing that some kids do. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/love.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="love">

Yep, I get the same thing. Sometimes I find that she is trying to tell me she's hungry by rooting around, but other times she just seems to want to be as close to me as possible.

Yep, my little one does it too. It's like she's trying to get as close to me as possible. I love it. It gives me a lttle boost to think she wants and loves to be close to me.

I wish she did that. My little one scratches the heck out of the back of her head down near the neck when she's tired. Fingernails cut or not, she's got a bunch of tiny nicks back there.

Dd used to do that when she was a newbie. Turns out that she was developing cradle cap and it was really itchy! She'd also swipe at her forehead with her hand.

My DD does this. She will do it with her nose as well like she is trying to scratch her nose, lol.

My ds still does this at 12 months. He's usually saying he wants to nurse, and perhaps is feeling a bit tired and in need of a cuddle too. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile">

DS (9 mos) loves to rub his nose on me when it's runny. Hey, what can you do? Glad he found something that works for him!
