My son has bipolar disorder and GAD (and hypothyroidism, which developed as a result of the lithium). He takes pills 3 times a day, including at school. He is very worried that someone will find out he takes pills so they do it very discreetly at school and he doesn't want us to talk about it with anyone. I understand that mental illness carries a social stigma but I think at some point people will find out. He has said if people find out that he won't want to leave the house ever again. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/greensad.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="greensad"> So whatever your child's issue - are they embarrassed about it and do they try and hide it?

My older dd does not want anyone to know about her immune def issues and will not do any part of her therapy when someone else is around and she makes sure to keep her stomach covered when others are around because she doesn't want them to see the circles we draw to mark infusion sites or any red marks left by adhesive ect. She doesn't want them asking questions and realizing she is different. She had a cow when she realized I would be doing her infusions while dd #2's nurse was here because I refuse to stay up all night infusing her anymore. It wasn't until she was sure the nurse has seen IV's and sub-q infusions before and wouldn't think she was weird that she relented this past week. The pump is really portable and she can wear it in a little fanny pack so she can go play or run errands with me but she won't leave the house while she's infusing so she's stuck in the house all day that day because she won't risk anyone seeing or hearing anything. (the pump makes noise)
